The Indigenous musician, songwriter, and educator showcases a lifetime of musical experience on his latest release
Accomplished Indigenous musician, singer-songwriter, and educator Greg Carroll has spent decades building a diverse career rooted in performance, collaboration, and storytelling. From touring and recording as a bassist with artists including Jess Moskaluke, Chad Brownlee, and Amos Garrett to earning recognition with his own band, Black Mountain Whiskey Rebellion, Carroll has developed a wealth of experience across the Canadian music landscape.
Now, he brings that experience to the forefront with his recent album, Writing on the Wall, a collection that highlights his strength as a songwriter and reflects the musical journey that has shaped him along the way.
First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hello, I am Greg Carroll, an indigenous artist from St. George’s Newfoundland.
Tell us a bit about your recent release.
I just released my second single from my Album of the same title, Writing on the Wall. This is a driving 90’s Dwight Yoakam – esq toe tapping country song.
Walk us through your creative progress when creating music.
For Writing on the Wall, I wanted to create a danceable 90’s country song that appeals to all ages.
Now that the music is out, what does the ‘road ahead’ look like? Beyond tours and videos, what’s one ‘bucket list’ goal you hope to achieve with this release?
Gearing up for a 12-date Maritime tour called ‘Guilty As Charged’ with my band The Misdemeanors. We will be traveling Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island playing my album and catalog selections from my former band, Black Mountain Whiskey Rebellion.
My bucket list goal for this release is to look out into the audience and see people singing along to my music.
Every artist has a ‘lightbulb moment’ where things just clicked. Looking back, what’s the one performance or milestone that made you realize, ‘Okay, this is what I was meant to do’?
When I was 16 years old onstage playing in-front of my peers at a high school function, I found myself swept up in the applause and recognition. That is when I knew I would do this for the rest of my life.
