Two influential names in Canadian new wave came together at Maxwell’s in Waterloo on October 16, 2026, as Spoons and Rough Trade shared the bill for a night celebrating decades of Canadian music.

Known for hits such as “Nova Heart,” “Romantic Traffic,” and “Old Emotions,” Spoons helped shape Canada’s synth-driven new wave sound throughout the 1980s. Led by Gord Deppe and Sandy Horne, the band continues to bring its distinctive music to audiences across the country.

Rough Trade, co-founded by Carole Pope and the late Kevan Staples, earned a reputation for challenging musical and cultural conventions with songs including “High School Confidential,” “All Touch,” and “Crimes of Passion.” With Pope at the forefront, the band’s influential catalogue remains an important part of Canadian rock history.
