Toronto’s Maya Killtron delivers a funk-fuelled anthem of accountability alongside Halifax artist Aquakultre.
Toronto singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Maya Killtron is turning up the volume on accountability with her confident new single, “Receipts,” featuring 2026 Polaris Music Prize-shortlisted Halifax artist Aquakultre.
Blending funk, disco, and house influences, the track delivers a pointed message about speaking up, calling people out, and refusing to remain silent. Inspired by Maya Killtron’s experiences as a woman in the music industry, “Receipts” combines her signature ’80s-inspired sound with contemporary production and an unapologetic attitude.
Maya Killtron Receipts: A Bold Anthem of Accountability
With “Receipts,” Maya Killtron embraces the power of speaking openly about uncomfortable truths, particularly within the music industry.
“In this industry we all have receipts,” Maya says. “We should use them more.”
While “Receipts” takes a more confrontational approach, Maya Killtron previously explored the complexities of maintaining long-term love with “Touch This Body.” In a recent Canadian Beats interview, she shared more about the single and her creative journey.
The statement reflects a recurring theme in her songwriting: saying the quiet part out loud.
While her previous single, “Touch This Body”, explored the effort required to maintain long-term love, “Receipts” takes a more confrontational direction.
“It’s the act of calling people out, saying their name, and standing on business regardless of consequence, as silence is always worse. I’m finally in my villain era,” Maya explains.
The result is a dancefloor-ready track that pairs its infectious grooves with a message about accountability, confidence, and finding the courage to speak up.
Maya Killtron and Aquakultre Bring Funk, Disco, and House Together
The creative process behind “Receipts” began unexpectedly when Maya Killtron discovered Halifax producer Dalvay making a beat live on TikTok.
Intrigued by his sound, she reached out immediately. Dalvay soon began sharing musical ideas, and their shared appreciation for classic funk helped shape the song’s house-influenced direction.
“Dalvay perfectly captures sonic elements from ‘80s funk and makes them future,” Maya says. “We’re inspired by the same people and music, so it just made sense.”
The track also features a live performance from Re.verse bassist Diomo, whose opening bassline establishes the song’s infectious rhythm.
Adding another dimension to the collaboration is Halifax artist Aquakultre, whose appearance strengthens the connection between Toronto’s funk-driven music scene and Halifax’s creative community.
Maya Killtron Celebrates Her Halifax Connections
For Maya Killtron, collaborating with Halifax musicians carries a personal significance.
The East Coast played an important role in her early career, providing some of her first supporters, dedicated fans, and touring opportunities.
“I will forever shout out the North End, The Seahorse, Charlie’s and Pizza Corner,” she says.
Those connections make “Receipts” more than a musical collaboration. The track also celebrates the communities and creative relationships that have helped shape her career.
Musically, the single reconnects Maya with her earlier years fronting house and club projects, when her performances were built around keeping dancefloors moving.
By combining those roots with funk, disco, and modern electronic production, “Receipts” showcases an artist confidently embracing both her musical history and her evolving creative identity.
