There’s no shortage of incredible music being made across Canada, but some of the most exciting artists are the ones you may not have discovered yet.
That’s where Canadian Beats’ Ones to Watch comes in. This new feature puts the spotlight on emerging and independent Canadian artists and bands that have caught our attention — and that we think deserve a spot on your radar.
First up, we’re heading to Calgary to introduce you to The Sour Patch Men.
Meet The Sour Patch Men
Calgary’s YYC Music Award-nominated indie-folk outfit The Sour Patch Men blend sharp modern songwriting with the warmth of traditional bluegrass arrangements, creating a sound that manages to feel both timeless and daring.
Known for their disarming stage presence, quick wit, and high-energy performances, the band has carved out a place for themselves as fearless innovators within Calgary’s folk and bluegrass scene. But putting The Sour Patch Men into one musical box isn’t exactly easy. Their sound pulls from bluegrass, country and punk while leaving plenty of room for experimentation along the way.
What We’re Listening To
The Sour Patch Men released their sophomore album, 4/4 Waltzes, on August 25, 2026.
Building on the kitchen-party spirit of their debut, the album pushes the band’s self-described “progressive trad” approach even further. Bluegrass, country and punk form the foundation, but 4/4 Waltzes also dips into polka, blues, gospel, Broadway and experimental territory.
The album also expands The Sour Patch Men’s world beyond their Bowness neighbourhood, bringing together friends and musicians from Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer and Lethbridge.
Across the record, the band tackles everything from animals, Jesus and drinking to love, death, sex and loneliness. It’s an unlikely collection of subjects that comes together as a celebration of community, an exploration of the human condition and, ultimately, an expression of joy.
Why They’re One to Watch
It’s that refusal to stay neatly inside the boundaries of traditional bluegrass that caught our attention.
The Sour Patch Men clearly respect the music that influences them, but they aren’t interested in simply recreating it. They’re willing to throw country, punk, humour and experimentation into the mix and see where it takes them. Combine that adventurous approach with their focus on community and an already growing reputation on the Calgary music scene, and they’re exactly the kind of Canadian band Ones to Watch was created to highlight.
What’s Next?
After releasing two albums and two EPs in just two years, you’d think The Sour Patch Men might be ready to slow down.
Maybe.
The band is currently putting the finishing touches on its second Frozen Prairie Tour, planned for February 2027. Major-city stops between Edmonton and Winnipeg are already confirmed, with the band working on filling in the spaces between them. Tentative British Columbia dates are also in the works.
There’s new music waiting in the wings, too. The band already has another collection of songs they’re excited to record, although they’re considering taking a year away from the studio to concentrate on touring and festivals.
Then again, as the band admits, that was the plan this year too.
“We just get so excited about the studio!”
Something tells us we haven’t heard the last of The Sour Patch Men for very long.
