You’ve been on these pages before, and it’s great to see you again! What’s going on with you since we last spoke?
Throughout 2023, my focus was predominantly on writing new musical compositions, particularly the creation of new jazz pieces that are slated for upcoming recording sessions. Also, I pondered the prospect of taking the stage in 2024, contemplating a live performance.
The aspect of the creative process that resonates with me the most is the art of improvisation, a practice I find immensely gratifying in generating new works for the piano. While my initial inclination leans towards creation rather than performance, I am bending to friendly pressures and find myself gearing up for a possible concert in 2024.
I derive immense pleasure from incorporating accompanying videos into my musical experience. These visual elements add an extra layer, providing a unique dimension to the auditory experience and allowing the audience to be truly immersed in the music. My artistic vision is shaped by live performance and video accompaniment, envisioning a spectacle where both elements complement and enhance the impact of each musical piece.
Tell us about the process of recording “AS IT GOES”?
Capturing this song in the recording studio was an absolute delight. Exploring repetitive musical patterns added a layer of enjoyment to the process, even though maintaining a precise balance presented its own set of challenges. The rhythmic guidance of a metronome proved invaluable! I consider myself fortunate to have the opportunity to record all of my songs at Raven Street Studios. The studio’s exceptional facilities and support contribute significantly to the quality of my recordings.
Your latest video shows thoughts on space travellers coexisting with advanced artificial intelligence. Pretty heavy stuff. Care to share on it?
The “As It Goes” video, as a mesmerizing sequence of tableaus and scenes, offers a glimpse into a potential distant future of space travel. It’s just a delight for the senses and fun to watch.
Do you use AI in making music? Can you see a time when it’s an everyday use for musicians?
I personally create music through an organic process. I explore themes on my acoustic piano, capturing the essence in my mind before translating them onto my electronic device. AI’s capability to extract elements from a song enables the creation of complementary secondary melodies or tracks and this is already happening. Now this is tempting!
AI is being used to help producers and musicians in creating music, or cleaning it up, for fans. Who do you wish had another album in them?
The Beatles have embraced AI to restore their classic records, prompting the question: why shouldn’t other legendary artists from the past follow suit? Personally, I’m eager to experience the revitalization of vintage jazz, particularly from the 1920s to the 1940s, featuring iconic vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald and perhaps others who have been forgotten.
AI is a whole new universe unfolding before us at galactic speed.
