Review

In “I’m The Queen,” the lyrics humorously show a relatable woman embracing her everyday role and responsibilities, playfully contrasting traditional royal expectations with her down-to-earth reality.

The catchy chorus, “I’m the Queen, Yea I’m in charge of it all, I’m the Queen, And my kingdom’s pretty small,” sums up the song’s central theme of embracing power and contentment within one’s own domain, regardless of its size or extravagance.

Musically, the lively tune matches the song’s playful feel and highlights the joy of finding fulfillment in the little things while being in control of one’s own world.

Overall, the relatable portrayal of embracing one’s unique kingdom and confidently asserting authority over one’s life delivers an uplifting and pleasurable musical experience.

First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers who have yet to hear about you?

Of course! My name is Jackie Kroczynski and I’m a Singer/Songwriter living in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. I released a new full-length album in March called She’s A Story and I’m super excited about it! When I’m not writing and recording, I teach music to high school students!

You’ve unveiled a music video for the song, “I’m the Queen,” from your album, She’s A Story. Care to tell us a bit about the writing process of this track?

Well, I wrote this track last fall, after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. It was during that time after her death but before her funeral. I got to thinking that I was kind of like the Queen! Well, in the sense that I’ve got my people and my little parcel of land, which is my yard and my throne, which is really my couch. So, I just went from there with my comparisons. We are kind of the same only Queen Elizabeth II had a MUCH larger domain. The song is not too serious!

The music video was directed by Gavin Baird and filmed at Stone Hall Castle in Saskatchewan. How was this experience?

It was so great. I had never heard of Stone Hall Castle before, and it has an interesting history. It was built by Francis Darke for his wife and completed in 1926. They used imported limestone and is filled with medieval furnishings. Gavin and his team did a fabulous job of working in the space, which had some challenges!

What was the highlight of the video shoot?

Well, the whole place was lit by candles that are made on-site, so that made it interesting. It was also fun to wear my Queen dress and crown and work with my own prince, Tom Kroczynski on the bass! It was just a great experience and I feel so fortunate that we were able to find such a fabulous location here in Saskatchewan. I’m really grateful to Creative Saskatchewan for their support of the project.

If you were asked to describe your sound in 3 words, what words would you choose?

I’m taking words from other people! And I’ll choose; upbeat, authentic, storyteller – I like to have fun!

Last but not least, what else do you have up your sleeve for 2023?

The video release is my number 1, and I am planning on doing a short tour the last weekend of November and the first weekend of December. Venues are still to be confirmed but I will be out in Calgary, Edmonton, and Red Deer way. I also have a few shows booked in Saskatoon in the coming weeks. You can catch me next at d’Lish by Tish on Saturday, August 26th, at 7:00 pm
