Guinness World Record-Setting Rapper D.O. Gibson Releases Multiple Singles
Duane “D.O.” Gibson — Canadian hip-hop artist, author, and two-time Guinness World Record holder — returns with his heartfelt new single “Dad I Did It,” which dropped June 13 via Believe. Featuring Saukrates and produced by JUNO winner Rich Kidd, the track arrives just in time for Father’s Day and serves as the lead single from D.O.’s upcoming album, Just To Finish the Story.
Followed up by “Last Summer” (feat. Angela Saini) on June 27 and the upcoming “Day Job” (feat. Robbie G) on July 11, D.O. is kicking off a summer of purpose-driven music rooted in gratitude, family, and hustle.
Beyond music, D.O. is an author, educator, and community leader known for his Stay Driven youth program and Northern Power Summit. With deep roots across Canada and a legacy of inspiring others, D.O. continues to use his voice to make a lasting impact.
First off, what have you been up to since we last spoke?
It’s been a wild and fulfilling ride. I’ve been touring schools across Canada with my Stay Driven program, doing shows from Nova Scotia to British Columbia, and dropping new music that really speaks to where I’m at now, personally and professionally. I’ve also been working on my children’s album and book, blending education and Hip-Hop in a way that uplifts the next generation. And on top of that, I’ve been connecting with folks internationally — from Colombia to Europe — to expand the impact of what I do.
“Dad I Did It” feels like a deeply personal song. What inspired you to write it now, at this point in your journey?
I’ve had this idea for a long time — I even had the hook written over a decade ago. But it didn’t feel right to release it until now. I’m at a point in my life where I’ve lived enough to reflect and say, “Yeah, I did that.” It’s a song about legacy — for my father, for myself as a father, and for anyone who’s ever wanted to make their parents proud. I wrote it now because I’ve finally lived enough to truly mean every word.
The track features Saukrates and production by Rich Kidd — two Canadian icons. What was the energy like bringing this collaboration to life?
Electric. There’s just something about working with people who are not only talented but legends in the game. Saukrates came through with that timeless hook — raw and emotional — and Rich Kidd’s beat gave the whole track that soul and knock I was looking for. It wasn’t just about making a dope record — it was about telling a story with people I respect deeply.
What does Father’s Day mean to you personally, and how do you hope this song resonates with others during that time?
Father’s Day hits different now that I’m a dad myself. It’s not about a tie or socks — it’s about connection, appreciation, and presence. “Dad I Did It” is a letter to my father, but it’s also a mirror for listeners. Whether you had a father, lost a father, are a father, or never had that relationship, I hope the song opens up space for healing, reflection, and gratitude.
You were named one of Shifter Magazine’s 2024 Top 20 Outstanding Black Canadians. What does recognition like that mean to you — especially coming from within your own community?
It means the world. When your own people see you — not just the accomplishments, but the heart behind it — that’s powerful. I’ve always felt a responsibility to represent our stories with pride and authenticity. So getting that kind of recognition from Shifter — who’ve been big supporters of Canadian Black excellence — felt like a real moment of affirmation.
Just To Finish the Story is such a reflective title — but is this really the final chapter or just the end of one volume?
Oh, it’s just the end of one volume for sure. Just To Finish the Story is about tying together threads from my past — themes I’ve touched on but never fully explored until now. It’s a bookend to one part of my journey, but I’ve got so many more chapters to write. This album is a milestone, not a conclusion.
