Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
We are a collective of musicians from Toronto who have been performing together for 13yrs. The crew consists of Jason Larmond, Juwayon (zhu-way-on) Clarke, Otis Williams, Johnathan Kerr, and Omar Lunan. Individually, we all are very busy when called to do work with some of the Nation’s best either locally or abroad (e.g., Daniel Caesar, Jully Black, Deborah Cox, Andy Kim, and Shawn Hook). It’s been a blessing to say we literally do what we love!
Tell us a bit about your most recent release.
“Edges Laid (Tonight)” was actually a whole vibe! We got together to work on production, and Juwayon put a vocal adlib on it that stuck. Omar wrote the song, and we all added the other pieces to the mix. The idea of the record is just that feel-good, “we have nothing to do, but you look too good to do nothing” kind of vibe. It’s fun, and it’s also the theme song for our live music series when we perform!
Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?
We prefer to create music that’s relatable. We pull from some of our own experiences and musical tastes as well. It’s also not a linear process because what you’re able to create on a particular day could be influenced by how you feel, what’s happening in the world, or we might just catch a vibe on a bassline or piano line. We’re good at creating wherever our spirit leads us. Kind of like how we are when we perform. Whatever moves us is where we will end up.
Do you have any upcoming shows or festivals you want to tell us about?
We have a great show on May 25th with 2 Toronto JUNO nominated artists that give their all onstage (Kim Davis and O’Sound) and an incredible vocalist from the US who has garnered a lot of attention since the pandemic (Gene Noble). We’re going to have a fun time moving the crowd and enjoying the show ourselves. We can’t forget to have fun as well! Our last show on April 6th sold out in no time, and we’re really looking forward to that magic again. The city’s finest always comes out to support along with influencers, and it means the world to also put artists on stage who miss live music.
What’s your goal for 2023?
Aside from getting back to performing and bringing as many Canadian Artists to the stage with us, we plan on releasing a few songs this year and hopefully traveling across Canada to bring the live series to each province and bring out the best from each place. It’s going to be a great year for us and we have big plans!
