Edmonton, AB-based hip-hop artist K-Riz has unveiled the video for “What a Shame”, one of the many highlights from his The Room EP released in late 2020. About his part in the dissolution of a past relationship, the track captures the artist’s power as an agile lyricist and swoon-inducing R&B crooner.
Directed by JDats, The Room’s producer and a frequent K-Riz collaborator, the video wades through the stages of a breakup, while visualizing the heartfelt regret behind the track. Of the tune K-Riz says,
“It’s about wanting to take responsibility for relationships breaking down. Rather than making a song about being a victim, I wanted to own my wrongs.”
Coloured in pink and purple hues, the video’s concept draws inspiration from reality TV and the filtered way in which we see relationships play out in the public eye and on social media. Assisted by chilled-out synths, the slower-paced second act features a stripped-down rendition of the self-aware verse, “I couldn’t be everything that you needed/I couldn’t be all that I said that I was,” allowing K-Riz’s confession to be laid bare in the isolation of his voice.
