First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Sure! I’m Donny Smith, a Toronto-based singer-songwriter and guitarist, with a passion for writing and performing music. My sound consists of a blend of folk, contemporary pop, soul, and easy listening. Recently, I’ve been exploring a deeper dive into pop, enhancing my sound with synths and innovative techniques. I grew up in a musical family of eight siblings where rhythms and harmonies were an everyday thing for us. This rich musical environment not only instilled in me a passion for music from a young age but continues to inspire and influence my work, driving me to create music that resonates on both a personal and universal level.
You have unveiled your single, “Endless Flow.” Tell us a bit about the writing process behind the release.
Creating ‘Endless Flow’ was truly a journey of self-discovery for me. The song, at its core, is about feeling the rhythms of music with those you’re close to. But digging deeper, it reflects the larger experience of immersing yourself in life’s rhythms, being open and free, and truly embracing every moment with the people we care about. It’s about letting go and moving with life’s flow, a concept that has deeply resonated with me during the writing process.
If you had to choose just one lyric from the track as your favourite, which would you choose? Why?
It has to be ‘We’re in an endless flow, You feel the rhythm though, I know just where to go, To feel so alive.’ This lyric encapsulates the essence of music and dance for me, where we’re led by something beyond words, into a space where we can just be connected on a deeper level. It’s that moment when we’re not just listening to music but becoming a part of it.
You’re no stranger to the music industry, formerly the lead guitarist in Fairchild, a band with your siblings. How would you say the experience differs as a solo artist?
Being a solo artist offers a different kind of liberty and challenge. With Fairchild, there was a beautiful synergy with my siblings, a collective energy that shaped our music, and I’ll always cherish those days. However, as a solo artist, every note and lyric is a reflection of myself and my journey into self-discovery. It’s liberating and daunting because I don’t get to hide behind three other band members anymore; it’s just me, unfiltered and exposed. I love that, but it still scares me. With that said, for the past five years, the Smith family (all eight siblings) have still come together to record and create an annual Christmas music video under the name ‘With The Smiths.’ It’s a way for us to stay connected in a special way.
What’s your favourite thing about being a musician in Toronto?
Toronto’s diversity is its strength, and it’s that diverse energy that feeds creativity. I’ve met so many musicians from different backgrounds with various sounds that you can’t help but feel lucky to be an artist in a city like Toronto. Being a part of the culture and ethos of this city is an amazing thing because I’m not just contributing to it in my small way, but I’m feeding off it as well. It’s home.
Last but not least, what else do you have up your sleeve for the remainder of 2023 into 2024?
I’ve been involved in music for most of my life, and yet, I feel like I’ve only just begun to scratch the surface, and I love that. ‘Endless Flow’ is the first release of many to come, each telling a story of the human experience. Also, I love to perform and bring people together, and that’s exactly what I intend to do. I’m currently working on finalizing tour dates and will be announcing them soon. My focus is primarily on writing songs that speak to people’s emotions and playing shows that foster a sense of unity and togetherness.
