Five Questions With Cynthia Tauro

Schomberg, ON-based pop/jazz artist Cynthia Tauro has released her newly minted single, “You Know Me”.

“This song is about those people who truly know you,” Tauro says, getting to the heart of the matter. “It’s about those people where there is no need to be anyone but yourself around them — they like you exactly as you are, flaws and all.

The sentiment felt similar while in the studio recording, she shares. “This song came easily in the studio… I was fortunate to work with two outstanding drummers — Larnell Lewis and Marito Marques — and, as soon as they heard the first couple of chords and my melody, they knew what the groove needed to be.

“It was so much fun to record and spend time in post-production with Marito exploring and creating for this one song.”

With “You Know Me” comes the first preview to Tauro’s current exploration of new genre-bending ground when it comes to her forthcoming EP, set to feature her intimate, soulful lyrics and engaging energy.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hello! I’m Cynthia Tauro, and I’m a pianist, singer/songwriter from Schomberg, Ontario. I just released my single ‘You Know Me’ and am so fortunate to have worked with some of Canada’s finest musicians. I’m constantly developing my sound, and this song fuses jazz, with world music, Latin, and pop all together. We worked really hard on this song and I’m so excited that it’s finally out!!

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

I think my music incorporates many different genres. It fuses jazz, with pop, Latin, and neo-soul. I love so many different genres, and I think my music reflects that. I came from a family of musicians so I was constantly surrounded by live music. They also played so many different genres, so my ears were introduced to it all!; jazz, classical, funk, pop, rock… I think that plays a major role in my music!

I usually start at the piano and play a couple of chords. Once I like the chord progression, a melody comes to me, and I pretty much write down whatever I’m feeling at that moment. Whatever emotions or deep feelings I have, I try to capture them and get them down on paper.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

Sadly no 🙁 Due to circumstances, all of my live shows have been canceled. I have been going live on Instagram for my followers every couple of weeks though! So those have been shows in themselves. I’m planning a little Christmas show on FB/Insta live, but the date is TBD! Very excited about it.

I’d say my live show is very intimate. I love connecting with my audience and talking to them as if we were already friends! I usually play with a full band, and that makes the energy in the room even better. We always have so much fun on stage, and I think if we are having fun, that transfers over to the audience.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

My single ‘You Know Me’! I think this song shows where I am musically right now.. (or at least when I recorded it). Although I am excited to put new stuff out as well! I think I’m constantly changing, and so each song I write/record feels different and expresses how I feel in the moment/ or at that time. Therefore, I’m now eager for my new songs to come out!

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

JP Saxe has been on heavy rotation… But I also love the artists I was able to work with on this song… Marito Marques, Larnell Lewis, Rob Christian, Rich Brown and Zach Stuckey! All major Canadian icons and I’m lucky to have them record my music! To name a couple of others…Michele Mele, Laila Biali, Diana Krall, Daniel Caesar, Alessia Cara, Carol Welsman, Little Scream, are also alllll AMAZING!
