Violet Night Shares New Single & Video, “Ferrari Red”
From zero to ANTI-HEROES, it sure looks like VIOLET NIGHT, are quickly becoming the new torchbearers of Toronto’s alternative music scene. Spearheaded by vocals and multi-instrumental visionary Connor Pohl, the band began as a solo project, that blossomed into a collective force. Their latest offering, “FERRARI RED” currently resides in the top 40 on alternative radio charts. Plus a brand new video accompanied the release and you can see it here and now.
Their music merges alternative rock, indie pop, and ambient layers, creating a sound that’s both ethereal and unfiltered. Drawing inspiration from personal experiences and the human condition, VIOLET NIGHT’s songs often explore themes of self-discovery, introspection, existentialism, and the complexities of relationships. Featuring hauntingly emotive vocals, combined with the band’s lush instrumentations, creating an immersive sonic landscape that invites audiences to delve into their introspective narratives.
This new single, FERRARI RED is a sleek, tongue-in-cheek alt-rock anthem and we assure you, it’s the most fun you’re going to have with a song this year. With its undeniable, sing-along melody reeling listeners in hook, line, and sinker, it’s a party, and everyone’s invited. The song revolves around vocalist Connor’s introspective take on those entrenched in the relentless pursuit of social validation. You can find it across all of your favourite streaming platforms, available to share with all that will listen to it.
But with a string of releases over the last few years, including their smash EP daydream drama and LP A N T I H E R O E S. VIOLET NIGHT has garnered a dedicated fan base and praise for their music. Their live performances are a testament to their artistic prowess, captivating audiences with their raw energy and magnetic stage presence. Extensive touring in the U.S., along with countless Canadian concerts have proven VIOLET NIGHT’s charisma belongs on the stage, as much as their creativity belongs in the studio. Be prepared to paint yourself “FERRARI RED” and lose yourself in VIOLET NIGHT.
FIRST OFF, CARE TO INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO OUR READERS?
My name is Connor Pohl, I’m the singer, guitarist and primary songwriter for the alternative band “VIOLET NIGHT”. We’re currently based in Toronto, ON but we’re originally from the northwest. The far north, west.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR RECENT RELEASE.
It’s something I’m really proud of. The team involved are some of my favourite people who I’ve worked with on music before – Randor Lin and Robbie “Father Bobby” Townsend produced the track as a duo. Randor and I have quite a storied history, he produced our first EP “I Hope You’re Well” and first LP “Colours of You” and then he and Robbie worked in tandem producing the majority of our sophomore LP “A N T I H E R O E S”. We worked with a different team on the “daydream drama” EP (though the title track was produced by this team). All of this to say, we broke the top 40 alternative this week, which is something I’m really happy to share with them because it’s not the first swing we’ve taken together, but when we swing, we swing for the fences, and this time we hit it out of the park.
Lyrically the song is a bit of a cheeky satire. I really love leaning into different aspects of my personality, and the lyrics here definitely are a reflection of that. The music video we did for “FERRARI” is my favourite video we’ve ever done. As an artist, you always want to set the bar higher for yourself, and I feel we’ve done that here.
HOW DO YOU TYPICALLY GO ABOUT THE SONGWRITING PROCESS? DO YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC METHOD OR CREATIVE ROUTINE THAT YOU FOLLOW?
With this song in particular I knew there was something really special about the chorus lyric. I felt the same way when I wrote “(if) you are the ocean (then) I would like to drown”. When songs like this come to me, be it from god, the creator (insert your deity here) I always feel a very deep sense of gratitude because they’re often written quickly and usually among the best work I do creatively. A lot of people like writing late at night. I’m actually quite the opposite, All hours of the day are good for me, but usually in the morning, I find that fresh energy of the day most inspiring. There’s less noise rattling around in my brain so it’s easier to write and focus on whatever I’m inspired by. I don’t have a method or a process – when I feel inspired I always scratch the itch to jot it down. My notepad has hundreds of songs, alongside the voice memos on my phone.
LOOKING AHEAD, WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR SUPPORTING THIS NEW RELEASE? ARE THERE ANY UPCOMING TOURS, MUSIC VIDEOS, OR ADDITIONAL CONTENT THAT FANS CAN LOOK FORWARD TO IN CONNECTION WITH THIS PROJECT?
Some shows are coming up here in March in Toronto that we’re very excited about. We’ve got a Canadian Music Week showcase in June, and are currently in the process of figuring out a US tour for the fall. Is there an album? Of course, there is. we will definitely have more singles, more music videos, and more limited merch drops. At the end of it all, we’ll tie it together and follow up A N T I H E R O E S properly with our third full length.
LOOKING BACK ON YOUR MUSICAL CAREER, IS THERE A PARTICULAR MOMENT OR ACCOMPLISHMENT THAT YOU CONSIDER A TURNING POINT OR A HIGHLIGHT?
I think ⅔ of the last singles we released to radio hit the top 40 and that’s pretty significant, the other charted to somewhere in the 50’s I believe “headtrip”. I am definitely eternally grateful for the team that surrounds me and all of the people who believe in what we’re doing and want to be a part of it. I think people always look to me as the frontman and accredit all of our success to me, though I am very hard working and always try to be the best I can for what it’s worth – I’d be nothing without the team. A highlight to me is being so fortunate to work with such talented people. It’s humbling that they hold me in such high regard.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, IT’S TIME TO PAY IT FORWARD, WHAT UPCOMING BAND OR ARTIST WOULD YOU RECOMMEND YOUR FANS CHECK OUT?
Nickelback and Limp Bizkit. Y’all dogged on them for years. Now it’s time to pay the pied piper and admit that they rule. Throw on some LB and pick a fight with your step dad, for old time’s sake.
