First Robin Illuminates a New Chapter with “Today I Am A Lighthouse”
Toronto singer-songwriter Alexandra Sullivan, performing under the name First Robin, is stepping into a new chapter with her latest single, “Today I Am A Lighthouse.” Released August 14, the atmospheric indie-folk track completes a debut trilogy that also includes “Spider Veins” and “Siren Song.”
First Robin marks Sullivan’s return to music following a multi-year hiatus, during which she faced a number of personal and creative challenges. Much like the first robin signalling the arrival of spring, the project represents a fresh beginning and a renewed sense of clarity, confidence, and maturity in her songwriting.
“Today I Am A Lighthouse” began after Sullivan stumbled across an unfamiliar chord progression and quickly developed into a song centred on reinvention, self-actualization, and learning to surrender control.
“I feel like I have rebuilt my life over the last year, and while that has been beautiful and miraculous, it has also been super uncomfortable and dysmorphic,” Sullivan shares. She describes the song as a reflection on navigating reinvention, trusting herself and beginning to recognize her full potential.
The lighthouse imagery at the heart of the track represents Sullivan’s decision to stop drifting and instead stand firmly in who she has become. Rather than being one of “two passing ships flailing in the night,” she is choosing to become the lighthouse — sending out her own light and trusting what comes her way.
Produced by Joel Schwartz, an ASCAP and SOCAN Award winner, and mastered by Grammy Award winner Justin Gray, “Today I Am A Lighthouse” pushes First Robin’s cinematic indie-folk sound further. Ambient textures mingle with distorted guitar, electronic percussion, and subtle vocoder effects designed to recall distant foghorns and fragments of broken radio chatter. The resulting sound balances intimacy with a larger cinematic atmosphere, with influences including Phoebe Bridgers and Bon Iver.
