Scrap Arts Music is an extraordinary Canadian endeavor that delivers delightful, unexpected music guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and fill your heart with joy.

Co-Artistic Directors Gregory Kozak and Justine Murdy, the masterminds behind the quintet, craft over 145 one-of-a-kind instruments from reclaimed and salvaged materials, showcasing their unwavering commitment to material environmentalism.

The ensemble has recently unveiled their 16-song album, Children of Metropolis. The release takes visual inspiration from German films of the 1920s. The compositions also serve as the mesmerizing soundtrack to an upcoming film conceived by Kozak and Murdy and directed by filmmaker Andrew Struthers.

As this is a truly expansive album, choosing two songs to focus on, was in fact, a tedious task.

“I Was Wrong” is an upbeat electronic track, brimming with percussion and devoid of lyrics. It carries a playful and adventurous vibe, with different percussion elements popping up, making it exciting and engaging. The careful arrangement of these sounds adds depth and texture to the track, making it feel both united and exploratory.

“Eccentricity” opens with a subtle, acoustic vibe, which morphs into a rich, expansive composition that lies somewhere in the middle of electronica and explorative acoustic. The track takes the listener on a captivating journey through this unique listening experience.

“The Last Word” begins with various sounds similar to stomping and slapping, commanding the listener’s attention. The track excels in its ability to convey a range of emotions and atmospheres and can transition from moments of intense, driving energy to more contemplative and introspective passages seamlessly.

Overall, Children of Metropolis leaves the listener with a sense of curiosity and a desire for further exploration into the world of Scrap Arts Music. The absence of lyrics allows the music to be a universal language, and for it to be accepted however the listener sees fit.
