Heavy Indie newcomers, GreenWing, have unveiled their album, Late Bloomer.
The 8-song release begins with the title track and previous single, “Late Bloomer.” The band had also unveiled one other single ahead of release, “Social Cues.” Both tracks did a great job introducing the band and leaving listeners wanting more.
After multiple listens, I decided on my two standout tracks, “Ten Thousand Reasons” and “Frustrated.”
“Ten Thousand Reasons” opens with a heavy, punchy beat that I couldn’t resist. Throughout the song, the lyrics are centered around debt. The lyrics, “So now I got ten thousand reasons, to call it enough, Ten thousand reasons that debts fucked, so fucked,” explains the situation that many of us have been through. It’s one of those harder learning experiences, but now we all have some fun lyrics to belt out as we learn.
“Frustrated” shows the softer side of the band, which is always fun to hear from a normally heavy band. Now when I say soft, I don’t mean all puppy dogs and rainbows. I mean a more mellow beat, at least at the beginning of the track. As the track continues, the beat speeds up, and the vocals get harsher. Once we reach the last minute, the lyrics turn aggressive, and you can feel the frustration behind the track. With lyrics, “It’s been four years and I’m raw as hell, Maybe in another four I won’t feel the need to yell,” and “But it woulda been nice to know you’re sorry, It woulda been nice to know you knew, That I wasn’t okay,” set up the song perfectly. The band does a killer job on this track, and I love how it showcases various sides of their talent.
All in all, Late Bloomer is a great album from a very talented up-and-coming Canadian band. Take the time to check out GreenWing because it’s not the last you’ll hear of them!
