Toronto-Based Belizean Pop Sensation Skyzz Unveils Captivating New Single “Without You”
Skyzz, the pop singer known for his 2021 risqué summer anthem “Lento Y Pegadito,” drops his newest single, “Without You.” This latest offering delivers an enticing combination of Top 40 and pop elements, guaranteed to touch on that soft spot for his audience.
Growing up with a love of music, Skyzz found his passion when he played drums at a young age, revealing his natural talent for the instrument. So talented that at age 17, he used his dream and a pair of drumsticks to pursue his music career further. His musical influences draw from Alternative Rock, R&B, and Reggaeton. However, deep down, Skyzz’s inspiration originates from his Belizean foundation.
In late 2022, Skyzz curated a concert at the renowned Don on Danforth to ceremonialize his latest EP, Skyzz. This moment, alongside winning Manitoba’s CJ107’s title of Most Talented Performer in 2017, demonstrates his technical skill and ability to draw an audience.
The inspiration for “Without You” stemmed from the sudden and tragic passing of his best friend, a pillar of strength and lifelong confidant. From this sorrow, Skyzz had to mold an avenue for his healing, as the loss, he shares, “was simply too great to endure.” But with help from his longtime friend and mentor, Michelle Gold, Skyzz saw the need to tell his story through the development and production of “Without You.”
“Sometimes, in the face of inconceivable loss, we forget that the world will go on and death is simply a part of life that cannot be avoided,” he adds on, “even for the ones we love most.”
He continues, “I made this song in the hopes that someone who is facing tragedy, be it loss of life or the loss of love, understands that they are not alone.”
“Without You” tugs on the heartstrings and takes the listener on a journey of grief and emotional discovery. The production on its own feels nostalgic, Skyzz’s emotion through his singing reverberates throughout the song from start to end. Only a few artists manage to force the listener to take on their frame of mind. Skyzz does this effortlessly, and one can hope that anyone experiencing loss can survive it and learn to endure “even if the world is forever less beautiful without them.”
Care to introduce yourself?
My name is Skyzz and I am a pop singer-songwriter. I began my musical journey when I was around 12 years old, living in a small town called Dangriga in the tropical country of Belize. At the age of 17, I moved to Canada to pursue my music career. Now, I reside in Toronto, which is interesting because it reminds me a lot of Belize in terms of culture and the diverse group of people from different parts of the world who come here to pursue their dreams and create a better future for themselves and their families.
Tell us about the process of recording “Without You”?
When I was writing without you, I was going through a tough transition because of the passing of a loved one. Fortunately, my close friend and writing partner, Michelle Gold, helped me navigate this season by assisting me in writing this song. Originally, the song was meant to be a slow ballad, but it gradually transformed into something more upbeat, incorporating my Belizean roots and Latin culture with strong Pop influences. Witnessing this fusion was truly beautiful.
I vividly recall being in the studio when I stumbled upon the guitar riff for the song’s intro and immediately knew it was the perfect fit. My favorite part of the song is the second verse, where the melody and lyrics seamlessly flow together – it gets me every time. Vocally, the most challenging part for me was the bridge. It required vulnerability and authenticity, reflecting my true emotions as I mourned the loss of my friend. It was a truly vulnerable moment. The bridge serves as a stark contrast to the rest of the song, adding depth and making it even more impactful.
What’s it like being musicians in Toronto?
I truly believe that this city is the ideal place for anyone who dreams of making a mark in the music industry. The city provides a wealth of resources and partnerships, making it incredibly accessible for musicians. It feels like a close-knit community, and if we all join forces and collaborate, incredible things can happen for all of us I’ve had the privilege of meeting countless amazing individuals during my time here, and I am eagerly looking forward to the opportunity to work with even more people and create something that brings joy to everyone.
Who was the first and most recent Canadian artist to blow you away?
There are numerous artists, and it would be unfair for me to single out anyone in particular. However, if I had to choose, I would say that MellyQueen has truly impressed me with her work ethic and passion. I was grateful to collaborate with her on our song. She exudes confidence, knows her goals, and consistently supports other artists on social media, uplifting their voices Her dedication to her music has inspired me to continue pursuing my own musical journey.
You’ve been making music for a bit of time now, what’s one piece of advice you can offer to those starting out?
If there’s one word that sums up all my advice, it’s longevity. As an artist, longevity is truly the ultimate goal. To achieve longevity, one must be patient, persistent, and focused on helping others. This selflessness can have a beautiful way of coming back around and benefiting oneself in the future. The key is to play the long game. Find your passion, know your identity and values, and pursue it with all your breath and strength. Believe that it’s possible because it is. And never forget to be grateful for every little thing and everyone that crosses your path.
