Canadian Rock Band One Bad Son Returns With New Single “I Come Alive”
Canadian rock band One Bad Son (OBS) is thrilled to unveil their latest single since 2018, “I Come Alive,” via a newly inked deal with Known Accomplice/ Cadence Music Group.
Produced by Brian Moncarz (Alice Cooper, Our Lady Peace, Moneen, The Tea Party) and written by Shane Volk, Kurt Dahl, Tara McLeod, Ryan Kuly, and Moncarz, “I Come Alive” is about the chaos of change. It’s about embracing that change and listening to the voice inside that wants you to let go and become the greatest version of yourself.
The band is also pleased to announce that they will be heading out on the road this winter. The shows will kick off in Red Deer, AB on November 21st at Bo’s Bar and Grill.
First off, care to introduce One Bad Son to our readers?
OBS is a Canadian Rock band from Saskatoon SK! KD and I have been playing together since 2004, so this has been a nearly 20-year adventure.
We built a great following in our hometown of Saskatoon, and around Western Canada in the late 2000’s, before we made a move to Vancouver. We signed with a label there, where we released 3 albums, multiple top 10 singles, and a number 1 hit on Canadian Rock Radio with “Raging Bull”.
In that time we went on multiple tours of Canada and the US, both headlining and opening tours (with Def Leppard, Judas Priest, and Shinedown, just to name a few). At the end of 2019, we were selected as one of the bands that would play alongside the Rolling Stones on their only Canadian stop that year.
When the COVID pandemic hit, we decided to take a full break until we could get back in the studio and on the road again. This became a very transformative period. Our guitar player (also a founding member of the band) stepped away, leaving KD and I to discuss what to do next. The decision was simple – let’s write some new songs! We added a full-time bassist, Ryan Kuly, and began writing together with our producer Brian Moncarz and Kittie’s Tara Mcleod on guitar. Together we’ve written some of the best songs of our career and are so grateful and excited for this new chapter in the OBS story!
You have unveiled your new single, “I Come Alive.” Tell us a bit about the creative process behind the track.
Our writing process is a bit different now that we are sharing a lot of ideas remotely. I had been messing around with the main riff to the song, and after sending it around to the band, we all felt like there was something there. We took that initial idea into pre-production and the magic that happened when we all got together was incredible. It was the most inspiring, positive experience I’d ever had writing. Ideas were flying and as the song took shape, we knew we had to record it. That same positive vibe continued into the studio and everyone absolutely killed their parts. Everything felt so new and inspiring which really led to the final version of the lyrics and title.
You worked with Brian Moncarz on the release. How was that experience?
Moncarz is the BEST! We’ve worked with some amazing producers before, and I feel like we struck gold again with Brian. He’s an absolute pro. He builds so much trust in the studio, and we all just felt free to do what we do best and have fun doing it!
The song had numerous writers involved, and all amazing writers I might add. What drew you to the track initially?
Mostly it just felt fresh. We didn’t want to overthink anything as far as what’s good for radio or what sound we want etc. We just went with ideas that spoke to us. I Come Alive felt really positive coming out of such a challenging time in the world. It’s also the kind of song you want to crank up and bang your head to, and that’s always a good thing in Rock haha.
You will be on tour in November and December, what can someone who has yet to see you perform live expect from your performance?
If you come to see OBS you get a real Rock N Roll experience. No backing tracks, no BS. It’s Rock the way we feel it’s meant to be played – loud and raw!
Last but not least, what else do you have up your sleeve for 2023?
Right now we’re focused on getting “I Come Alive” out into the world and spreading it to as many ears as we can. We’re prepping for the shows this fall and getting ready to celebrate 20 years as a band in 2024!
