Eventually is the latest release from the Toronto-based indie outfit, The Effens. The EP was self-recorded and produced in a basement room-turned-studio.
Built on the influences of bands such as The Strokes, the EP has all the characteristics of alternative grunge and indie, featuring driving rhythms, pulsing bass, and the snarls of a great distorted voice while also bringing something new to the genre.
Stand-out tracks include “Pavement Age’ with that driving bass and guitar combo riff, mixed with the lyrical equivalent of positivity to make the best of changing one’s life.
The song “Eventually” drives home the message of the toxicity of a partner in a relationship from online dating with lines such as ‘I can’t wait to bite in, I know every stitch to fit in. There’s no one like him, he treats me so badly, clip the wings and dovetail, fell in love right from the thumbnail.”
Overall, this release is the rise and fall of somebody who has it all, the fame, the riches, and the feeling of being at the top. One or more mistakes and it goes downhill and everything is taken away.
