Vancouver’s Maya Rae has unveiled a video for her single, “New For Me” from her upcoming album to be released in April.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Maya Rae and I am a 17-year-old singer/ songwriter from Vancouver, BC. I have been singing since the age of 9 and released my debut album when I was 14 years old.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
I’ve been writing my own music for a couple of years now; however, my writing partnership with my brother, Gabriel, begun about a year and a half ago. With my brother, I start by coming up with the melodies for our songs and he writes the lyrics. Sometimes it can go the other way though, and then we come together and work through the song making any changes we feel fit. A lot of the songs we write are about major topics/ issues going on in the world around us. Some of them are about things we’ve experienced personally, and others are about what other people around us have experienced.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
I’m playing 2 shows on January 26. I have a Jazz Vespers show at St Andrews United Church in the afternoon and then I’m playing at the Railway Club that night as a part of a Live Acts Showcase. I play a lot of various shows, so not one performance is ever the same. I usually incorporate a lot of my original music into the set, weaving them between some classic standards and new tunes as well.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
On the new album, “Can You See Me?”, I would suggest listening to “New For Me”. The song has a great blues vibe and is definitely one that a lot of people can relate to!
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
Joni Mitchell has always been an artist that I’ve looked up to in so many ways. She is one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to songwriting. Sarah McLachlan is another favourite of mine. Her voice and songs are so beautiful and have definitely helped inspire the artist I am today.
