Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi! My name is Andrea Nixon. I am a singer and a songwriter who calls Edmonton, Alberta home. I’m what some may call a late bloomer, haven chosen to pursue music in my 30s with three kids in tow. I released my debut album, “Diary of a Housewife,” September 2nd, 2017 on my wedding anniversary! I write songs inspired by the stories and experiences of the women I’ve know, the woman I’ve been and the kind of woman I hope to be one day. Storytelling is at the heart of what I do.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
I often storyboard my songs with the verses being the vehicle for a story that moves along through time and the chorus bringing the message home. I write with voice so I look at the words and the rhythm suggested in the syllables and then fit a melody over them that flushes out the feeling of the story being told. I basically make my words sing! Sometimes it happens quickly and other times, a song it born years after the main concept came to me, after a new experience completes the picture.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
In 2019, I’m so thrilled to be partnering with select Sunrise Records stores to bring my music to the setting that is accessible to all- the mall! More details on those appearances in forthcoming as we iron out the details! I’ve also got a ticketed show coming up February 15th as part of the Hot Shotz Music Series for those living in or near Spruce Grove, Alberta. More information on that show can be found at: https://bit.ly/2Rjd1
My live show has a lot of emotional and sonic dynamic as the tunes traverse a lot of ground, from sadness over the loss of a loved one to strength in the face of harassment and pressure to conform to someone else’s vision of who you ought to be. I also take a behind the songs approach to banter so the audience can expect to hear how the songs came to be and the people of experiences that inspired them.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
“Song Without a Name.” It’s fun and upbeat and directs listeners to rid themselves of a very bad word!
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
I’m a huge fan of Jessica Mitchell and was honoured to open for her in November on her Edmonton stop for the Heart of Glass tour. She is an incredible performer and writer and a gem of a human being. My favourite tune of hers is “Bulletproof.”
