Ninja Sex Party, TWRP
Commodore Ballroom, Vancouver, BC
June 20, 2025
It was the first time Ninja Sex Party brought their strange mix of sex jokes, synth rock, and unshakeable positivity to Vancouver. On Friday night, they ended their Pure Elegance tour, and reminded a sold-out Commodore Ballroom that absurdity and talent are not mutually exclusive.
Opening the night was TWRP, the interdimensional funk warriors who somehow manage to be both a tight instrumental band and living cartoons. Doctor Sung glided onstage (on a hoverboard!) and launched into “Digital Nightmare,” flanked by Commander Meouch, Lord Phobos, and Havve Hogan. Their set was packed with fan favourites like “Synthesize Her” and “Atomic Karate.” Their onstage chemistry and retro-futurist stage outfits made them look like the best video game band you’ve never played.
Then came Ninja Sex Party. Dan Avidan (aka Danny Sexbang) emerged in a sparkling blue cape, hips swaying with joyful menace, while Ninja Brian stared daggers from behind his keyboard, silently judging us all, as always. They kicked off with “Get Ready (To Get Ready),” a perfect opener that lived up to its name.
The set pulled heavily from their Under The Covers, Vol. IV album released in 2025, but there was room for older classics too. “6969” turned into a full-blown rock opera with TWRP backing them. Danny’s voice was strong, his banter weird and wonderful, and Ninja Brian stayed in full deadpan killer mode the whole way through.
They snuck in a few surprises, including a cover of The Cars’ “Just What I Needed.” But the biggest crowd reaction came from the last song of the night “Danny Don’t You Know.”
Ninja Sex Party and TWRP threw a party that feels part arena rock, part sketch comedy, part fever dream. Vancouver showed up ready, and both bands delivered. What a way to end a tour!
