Hollerado in Ottawa, ON – Show Review

Hollerado
November 21, 2024
Algonquin Commons Theatre, Ottawa, ON

Hollerado came out of their retirement in style and, most importantly, on home turf when they took to the stage at the Algonquin Commons Theatre in Ottawa on November 21.

The reunion came five years since the band called it quits following their final nationwide tour in 2019, and served a greater purpose as the band is scheduled to take the stage at Toronto’s History this coming weekend during Tokyo Police Club’s final performances.

Bringing their signature blend of catchy melodies, upbeat tunes and anthemic hooks, Hollerado resurrected their uniquely interactive and utterly hilarious show for the excited Ottawa crowd.  From the opening chords, it was clear that time had not hindered Hollerado’s ability to entertain.  The band kicked off the set with classic tracts, like “So It Goes,” “Americanarama” and “Good Day at the Races”

In terms of stage presence, Hollerado didn’t disappoint.  The band’s set kicked off with a little help from family friends, Bruce, Tom and John, who playfully acknowledged the band’s current status as “straight from the retirement home,” while frontman, Menno Versteeg, cracked jokes galore, and even entered the audience to play jump rope with his microphone cord; which created a feeling of connection that made the performance feel even more personal and special for the hometown crowd.

Opening for Hollerado’s triumphant return was East Coast rockers, Customer Service, and an acoustic set from Tokyo’s Police Club’s Dave Monks; which returned the favour for Hollerado reforming to see Toyko Police Club into their retirement.

All in all, Hollerado’s November 21 performance at the Algonquin Commons Theatre was a night to remember that left the crowd hoping for more from their beloved hometown band.
