Toronto’s Sarah Shafey Shares New Single, “I’m Sick”
Award-winning Canadian-Egyptian recording artist, Sarah Shafey is thrilled to release her latest single, “I’m Sick.”
Through her newest single “I’m Sick,” Sarah explores a tongue-in-cheek expression of battling a world that is constantly trying to mold artists into something they’re not. The fight between your ID, ego, and superego.
“I love pop music, but sometimes it becomes repetitive and feels manufactured,” Sarah explained, “this song is my way of having a bit of fun with that.”
The official music video, shot by The Trenches Media, portrays all viewers watching as Sarah transforms from a bubblegum pop princess to a darker alter ego, as she battles the stronghold of the machine, or industry if you will.
Review
“I’m Sick” offers a compelling and critical perspective on the current state of the music industry and popular culture.
At its core, this track’s lyrics serve as a direct and unapologetic critique of the music industry. The recurring refrain of ‘I am sick’ not only hooks the listener but also vividly conveys the songwriter’s profound frustration and exhaustion.
The song’s brilliance shines through its clever use of metaphors, likening popular artists to “Robocop and Autotune,” and characterizing their music as “nothings that mean nothing.” These metaphors encapsulate the sentiments shared by many who yearn for more depth and originality in their musical experiences.
In essence, “I’m Sick” challenges listeners to question music’s authenticity, sparking vital discussions about the future of popular music while delivering an engaging and thought-provoking listening experience.
