Festival d’été de Québec
Day 11: July 16th, 2023
with Green Day, Bad Religion and Peanut Butter Sunday
Festival d’été de Québec was on fire last night with a great night of rock! After a day of non-stop rain, thunderstorm predictions and “will they won’t they” feeling, everything went off without a hitch, nor a single drop of rain!
First at the main stage, Nova Scotia Punk Rock band Peanut Butter Sunday got the surprise of a lifetime when they were called to replace Meet Me At The Altar, who had to cancel at the last minute due to flight issues. The foursome was up for the challenge, and gave a great rocking performance, at the intersection between “we can’t believe this is happening” and “let’s make the most of it”. Alternating jokes and intoxicating guitar riffs, they put on a silly fun set which got the crowds hyped!
Up next, we switched from up-and-comers to established legends, with LA’s Bad Religion taking over the stage. Kicking things off with hit American Jesus, the band reaffirmed that their engagements from several decades ago are still very much in the heart of their performances. Despite nearing his 60s, frontman Greg Graffin absolutely captured the stage, to the joy of an audience ready for a heavy dose of nostalgia throughout the night.
Finally, headliners of the night Green Day emerged on stage with a bang, but not before teasing the tens of thousands of people on the plains to Bohemian Rhapsody and Blitzkrieg Bop, accompanied by their signature rabbit costume hopping around the stage. From there, the band went into high gear to the sounds of American Idiot and Holiday, setting the tone for the night to come. Billie Joe Armstrong and his gang played a plethora of their best hits, backed by an insane amount of pyrotechnics, and punctuated by multiple fans invited to play with them onstage. The performance was of the highest energy and extremely generous, a true masterclass in rock from a band that has been around for more than 30 years!
