Review

“I’ve Got Time” is a thought-provoking song in the indie-rock vein, that combines introspective lyrics and a melody that embraces a hint of chaos. The song navigates diverse themes, including the passage of time and moments of self-doubt.

The chorus, “Spent my days a sinner, Hoping to be a winner, I’ve got time, But how much, I’ve got time, But how much” captures a mix of regret, hope, and uncertainty about time in a concise and impactful way, embodying the song’s core emotions and themes.

With its simple yet profound lyrics, the song delivers a relatable message that strikes a chord with the audience, leaving a lasting impression.

Overall, “I’ve Got Time” portrays an underlying urgency that prompts listeners to reflect on their own aspirations and the time constraints they face.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hey there, I’m Clara aka Debbie Christ. Based in Montreal Quebec, I like to make music to help me get my thoughts in order and to process my big feels, and if I’m lucky, help others with theirs too.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

Released on June 22nd, our debut double single ‘I’ve Got Time/We Carry On’ is just a taste of what’s to come. When I wrote ‘I’ve Got Time’, I had the intention to create a song that people would be able to move and dance to. I hadn’t really done that at that point in my songwriting, most of my songs before that were slow and heavy. If you listen to the lyrics though they’re quite heavy still, focusing on the burdens of having to overcome childhood trauma as an adult. ‘We Carry On’ is a melancholic ballad, about having to let go of a bad relationship, even though it’s really painful, and learning to trust that everything will be okay in the end.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

It’s hard to say because I’m not really one to write with an exact goal in mind. Obviously, I have lots of musicians who inspire me, and who I appreciate a lot, but I usually don’t set out to be like “I’m going to write a song like this person or this style”. When writing music I have to let whatever comes to me when it’s ready to. Any time I try to force something it just ends up sounding really tacky. I have to really sit with myself, and what’s going on in my life, and just fiddle around on my guitar until the right thing clicks. Writing to me is like a big release, when an idea comes to me, it comes pouring and I have to record it immediately and then build it up from there.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

We’ve got 3 shows coming up in August in Montreal. The first is August 12th which will be my first solo show since I formed the current band at Maison. The second is on August 22nd at Casa De Popolo with two great local acts Keen and Erik Fine. The third is August 24th at Turbo Haus with another great local act, Rufus Cesspool. It’s going to be a fun month. Lots of chances to get a taste of Christ.

What’s your goal for 2023?

The ultimate goal is to get this dang album out by late Fall! It’s been a long time coming, I wrote most of the album in 2019-2020, so I’m ready to finally get these songs out and into the world. Currently, there’s some new material brewing inside my wee brain, for an entirely new album, but I need to finish my previous work before I can fully move on.
