Edmonton’s TANJERYNE teams with The Western Thistles on cheeky single “God’s Problem” from upcoming Leather & Denim LP
Edmonton, Alberta singer-songwriter Tanjeryne offers a timeless sound that blends classic country with hints of jazz, soul and folk-pop. Her latest collection, Leather & Denim, the follow up to 2024’s Stardust & Lost Things due out this fall, is her most compelling yet, produced by Mallory Chipman and featuring some of the city’s most accomplished musicians.
After teasing the album in 2025 with the wistful single “Storyteller,” Tanjeryne shares another preview today with the cheeky “God’s Problem,” on which she boldly embraces her perceived shortcomings. With acoustic duo The Western Thistles featured on track, “God’s Problem” is a shining example of Tanjeryne’s distinctive musical vision, putting a modern spin on traditional folk styles.
“‘God’s Problem’ is a tune I wrote that speaks to the challenges of women’s expectations in modern times,” Tanjeryne explains. “The song is a bit of a resistance to the expectations of domesticity while embracing the fact that we like to get in trouble, play, and be free of responsibilities too. When I wrote it, I knew I wanted my good friends Sabrina Huot-Boer and Mark Boer, The Western Thistles, on the track. Bri’s vocals and Mark’s banjo really gave it a more traditional sound.”
Tanjeryne draws influence from Lana Del Rey, Norah Jones and her first musical heroine, Linda Ronstadt. She feels that Leather & Denim is a major step forward in her evolution, becoming more open in her lyrical expression and developing a more organic sound overall.
“I wanted the songs to sound as they do when I sing them live,” she says. “I’m grateful to have had Mallory at the helm producing the songs; her arrangements really brought the songs to life. My voice has a natural Albertan twang. I’ve always tried to suppress it in my voice, but I think it comes out nicely on this record and reflects the music that I grew up listening to.”
