Julia Vos blends faith, grit, and humanity in her bold new country single “Jesus Drank Whiskey.”
Canadian country artist Julia Vos is celebrating her newest single, “Jesus Drank Whiskey”, which is on all digital streaming platforms.
Written by Julia Vos and produced by CCMA Award-winner Bart McKay, “Jesus Drank Whiskey” is a mid-tempo country track with flourishes of space, tension and grit. Julia uses spiritually driven storytelling to explore how a present-day interaction with Jesus intersects with a broader examination of faith and what it means to be human.
Since its release, “Jesus Drank Whiskey” has been added to editorial playlists on both Spotify (“North Country”) and Amazon Music (“Brand New Music” and “Just North of Nashville”).
Julia says, “This song comes from contemplating my own faith and looking closely at the world around me. ‘Jesus Drank Whiskey’ is a reminder that even when we are divided or distant from each other, we are still bonded by our own humanity. I hope this song encourages people from all walks of life – faith-based or not – to lean into kindness, open conversation, and genuine human connection.”
“Jesus Drank Whiskey” is both Julia’s first single of 2026 and the first release from the Edmonton-based artist’s planned debut EP, “Jesus, Whiskey, and Country Music”.
The new song arrives after an enthusiastic response to her first collaboration with McKay – 2025’s “I Only Kiss Cowboys” – which placed on two Spotify editorial playlists (“All New Country”, “Fresh Finds Canada”) and played in rotation on SiriusXM Top of the Country Radio. It also spawned a social series (“Reasons I Love Cowboys”) that reached 2 million Instagram views. The single’s accompanying music video recently earned Julia her first Country Music Alberta Award for Music Video of the Year.
“Jesus Drank Whiskey” is the 8th single to date for Julia in a career that has also seen her win “Nashville North Star” honours at the 2016 Calgary Stampede, play both the 2018 and 2023 Boots and Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase, participate as a 2019 Top 12 Project WILD Finalist, and perform on festival stages like Big Valley Jamboree and last year’s Country Thunder mainstage and the CCMA Country Crawl.
With “Jesus Drank Whiskey”, Julia is offering a thought-provoking spiritual reflection of how she sees the world today and setting a bold artistic path that the rest of her EP will follow.
Review
“Jesus Drank Whiskey” is a bold and thought-provoking track that takes a risk and makes it work. Julia Vos places a deeply symbolic figure into modern-day struggles, using that contrast to reflect on what we were taught versus what we see in the world now. The writing feels grounded and honest, never preachy, just observant.
The chorus stands out immediately, built around a striking question that sticks: “You think Jesus drank whiskey when his whole world began to fade?” It’s less about shock and more about humanizing faith in a heavy world. Paired with vivid imagery of everyday struggles, the song carries real emotional weight.
What lingers most is the message in the bridge, especially in lines like “When did we stop helping strangers, giving love without a cost?” Vos doesn’t offer answers, but she doesn’t need to—this is a song that makes you sit with it, and that’s exactly why it works.
