Jessica Lockwood embraces joy and self-growth on empowering debut EP Back To Yellow

Jessica Lockwood continues her rise as one of Ontario’s most exciting emerging voices with the release of her debut EP, Back To Yellow. Known for blending blues rock, soul-pop, gospel, and funk into a genre-defying sound, the Milton-based singer-songwriter uses the project to explore themes of joy, confidence, and self-discovery after periods of emotional heaviness. Centered around returning to yourself and choosing happiness, the EP showcases Lockwood’s soulful melodies, uplifting energy, and heartfelt songwriting. Ahead of the full release, Lockwood introduced listeners to the project through previously released singles “Take A Shot,” “Act Like That,” and her recent single “Headliner,” each highlighting the emotional and sonic range of the record.

Recent single “Headliner” is a bold, theatrical anthem about ambition, fame, and the desire for validation, capturing the rush of chasing dreams and living for the spotlight. Lockwood describes it as embodying the biggest version of herself as an artist, while also marking an exciting evolution in her sound through bold, cinematic, femme-forward energy.

Previously released single “Act Like That” explores the pain of one-sided friendships and growing apart from people who once meant everything. Through honest lyrics, the song captures the heartbreak of feeling taken for granted while learning to value relationships built on mutual care.

The title track, “Back to Yellow,” is an uplifting anthem about rediscovering yourself during difficult times and choosing joy despite life’s struggles. Using bright imagery and warm, carefree moments, the song paints “yellow” as a symbol of happiness, healing, and emotional renewal.

“Mount Olympus” offers a dreamy, euphoric exploration of love and emotional freedom, capturing the rush of being with someone who makes life feel brighter and more magical. Romantic and uplifting, the track paints love as an electrifying and otherworldly force.

“While I’m Still Young” is a heartfelt reflection on self-doubt, personal growth, and the pressure of becoming the person you hope to be. Honest and emotionally resonant, it serves as a reminder to be gentler with yourself while learning and growing.

Closing out the EP is previously released single “Take A Shot,” a spirited anthem about living in the moment, embracing spontaneity, and refusing to let uncertainty hold you back. Beneath its carefree energy lies a message of resilience, vulnerability, and hope.

Together, the songs on Back To Yellow form a deeply personal collection exploring self-discovery, healing, love, and resilience. Balancing vulnerability with uplifting moments, the EP feels like a coming-of-age journey rooted in honesty, reflection, and hope.
