Cam Blake releases new album, SATISFACTION OF SAMENESS (Interview)

INTERNAL DIALOGUE RESOLVES POWERFULLY IN CAM BLAKE’S NEW  ALBUM SATISFACTION OF SAMENESS

SATISFACTION OF SAMENESS is Cam Blake’s second, much anticipated full-length album including the singles “Gravity,” “RED TAPE,” “ANOTHER DESPERATE WORLD TURNED TO NOTHINGNESS” and the newest title single “SATISFACTION OF SAMENESS.”

After an epic sold-out year-end show at the Commodore Ballroom with Peach Pit in Vancouver, BC at the end of 2023, Cam Blake continues his progression as an artist and producer with this powerful new recorded offering.

Cam Blake tells us about the single and title track,

“”SATISFACTION OF SAMENESS” is one of the most important tracks for the overall concept of my new album. It follows a fictional conversation between me and an individual in a position of power. With my life in the balance, I’m being coerced to choose a merely satisfactory life over one with meaning. This story is ironically disguised in a fun Electronic-Dance track.”

Cam Blake explains that the album,

“SATISFACTION OF SAMENESS takes place within an infinitely repeating day. Following the frustrating and convoluted internal dialogue people face on a daily basis, like constantly looking at their phones all day for some kind of redemption or being bombarded and distracted with media and political dribble, or being subjected to stupid trends and people you can’t help but compare yourself to. Hating your job. Having a relationship that isn’t working out the way you want it to…you fall asleep, everything washes away and you start it all over again.”

First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Cam Blake. I’m a 23-year-old musician, producer, and mixer from Vancouver, BC Canada. I’ve been making music for most of my life – I started playing guitar at 7 years old and started recording and producing in my first DAW when I was 13. This new album is a culmination of everything I’ve learned over the last decade.

Congratulations on the release of your second full-length album, Satisfaction of Sameness! Can you share with us the inspiration behind the release?

‘SATISFACTION OF SAMENESS’ was created in 2021 during one of the worst wildfire seasons BC has ever seen. At the time I was house-sitting for one of my best friends, who is a wildland firefighter. All summer I was constantly berated internally with thoughts of global catastrophe. This album was created in hopes of capturing that state of existence. An ever-repeating day where you are thrown from heartache to existentialism, to pure panic.

You mentioned that the album takes place within an infinitely repeating day. How did you translate this concept musically and lyrically throughout the album?

This album is trying to confront and examine a thought process throughout the day. The clashing of ideas within one’s head, trying to find balance. The first song ‘GOOD MORNING’ is an ambient and almost cinematic sounding introduction. I wanted this song to bring the listener into the world I tried to create. The first single ‘GRAVITY’ then kicks in. This song represents a feeling of confidence and excitement towards life, yet still feeling like something is looming overhead. As you make your way through the rest of the album those lingering feelings begin to arise. As you finish the last song – ‘HOLDING ON’ (WAKE UP) the song then fades directly back into the beginning of the album. Beginning the day again.

The album seems to touch on the struggles of modern existence, such as the constant bombardment of media and the monotony of daily life. How do you hope listeners will connect with these themes?

That is a universal experience as a human being today in our society. I don’t necessarily know how affected some people are by it, whether that’s genuine or desensitivity. But regardless of the degree of severity, we all feel the weight of continued advertising, propaganda, insecurities, hopelessness, and the general mundanity of living.

“Another Desperate World Turned to Nothingness” is one of the singles from the album. What inspired this particular track, and how does it fit into the larger narrative of the album?

This is a key track within the album. Definitely one of my favourite songs on this project. ‘ANOTHER DESPERATE WORLD TURNED TO NOTHINGNESS’ represents the bottom. Reaching the end of the rabbit hole and coming to a bleak conclusion. Within this song and the title track – I am trying to communicate with some sort of higher power or being. Expressing how lost and confused I am.

With the release of Satisfaction of Sameness, can you offer any insights into your plans for future projects or collaborations?

I wrote and mixed this album between 2021-2022 so I’ve been through so many phases of music taste since then. Most recently though I just finished a folk album while I lived in England. It’s much more personal, less conceptual. I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever created.

I’ve also started an electronic trio group called ‘text dial-video archive’(TDVA). I’m extremely excited about it. We have a single coming out on May 17th. Two weeks after my album.

I’ve also been mixing and producing with a shoegaze/indie solo musician called Cherry Pick. She’ll be putting out an EP we made together in late May.
