Fellow Camper Wonder about Missed Connections on “Satellites” feat. Meredith Moon
Fellow Camper is a folk duo featuring Lee Watson and Benjamin Roy. They sing in a close, two-part harmony style, drawing inspiration from Canadian folk pioneers who graced the stages of Toronto’s Yorkville music scene in the 60s and 70s. Combine that with a modern sensibility, and you’ve got Fellow Camper.
Ben and Lee met at camp where they each experienced lots of moments laying under the stars next to friends – or someone who maybe could be more than that – and seeing these satellites in the sky. In those moments, you catch yourself thinking about the future and which of these relationships are gonna stick and which ones will end up on different paths where you might not see them again. Their song, “Satellites” (feat. Meredith Moon), is about those missed connections, and what could’ve been if things had been different.
The song was first recorded with just Lee and Ben’s voices but they wondered if the feeling and message of the song would come through stronger with a third, female part. It was an instant fit when they introduced the song to Meredith Moon – her voice sounds so unique and yet it blended quite well into their cohesive three-part harmony.
First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?
We are Lee Watson and Benjamin Roy and we love singing two-part harmonies. We’re based in southern Ontario. Some bluegrass fans might know Lee from the band The Breakmen back when he lived in Vancouver.
Tell us a bit about your most recent release.
We wrote Satellites to represent the what-ifs of all those relationships and paths in life that you come close to but that never quite materialize. We first recorded it with just our two voices but thought the feeling and message of the song would come through stronger with a third, female part. We sent “Satellites” to Meredith Moon, who really liked it. Her vocals were an instant fit because she has such a unique voice that also blended quite well to create a cohesive three-part harmony.
Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?
We’re playing at Hugh’s Room Live in Toronto on Saturday, November 4th, opening for Andrew Collins Trio an awesome acoustic band – Andrew was also the engineer on Satellites.
If given the chance, which Canadian artist would you love to work with in the future?
We love Doug Paisley’s writing. He’s such a great storyteller and player and his songs are catchy as anything. It would be very cool to collaborate in some way.
What’s your goal for 2024?
We’ve got a bunch more tunes in the hopper and will be putting them out into the world. We’d also love to play the folk festival circuit in the summer.
