Robinson Kirby Releases New EP, Where Are You Now
Where Are You Now is the second EP from Robinson Kirby, a musical project of Toronto-based songwriters Luke Robinson and Madelyn Kirby.
Expanding on the assured songwriting of their debut EP Little Dreams, the duo enters new territory with Where Are You Now (WAYN.) They augment organic instrumentation with synths, drum machines, and electric guitars, creating a sonic atmosphere both fresh and familiar. Robinson Kirby brings a rock-ier sound to this recording.
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hey readers! We’re Robinson Kirby, from Toronto, ON.
Tell us a bit about your most recent release.
Where Are You Now is our second EP. It shows some different sides to our songwriting and production, and we played around with different genres and vibes. There are more synths, drum machines, and electric guitars. We also tried to rock out a little more, reflecting the hours we’ve spent performing in the dimly-lit dives of Toronto in recent years.
We recorded the majority of WAYN in Toronto with Harrison Lenz at his home studio, as well as friends old and new from all over. Ross Hodgkinson recorded the drums in LA. Jack McLoughlin came into the studio on a day off of tour and played pedal steel. Kris Ulrich mixed and added some final production touches and completed the sonic vision.
Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?
We’re inspired by our environment, community, and relationships. We love making up stories and characters when we’re writing but they inevitably become infused with our own experiences.
Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?
The last show of our summer tour was last Saturday, September 23rd in Clarksburg, Ontario. We’re working on booking a show in Toronto this Fall.
What’s your goal for the remainder of 2023?
Record and release our next project, work with more people and play in more cities. And also become the Kings of TikTok (or whatever new social media platform comes out).
