The Franklin Electric, led by talented singer-songwriter Jon Matte, recently released their full-length album, Oh Brother. Matte has seen the person closest to him, his brother, struggle with addiction and homelessness issues for most of his life. After years of shying away from discussion, Matte has infused the power of change and healing into the band’s fifth and most heartfelt album yet.
“Its A Winding Road” is one of the new tracks, “an ode to my brother and to anyone who has struggled with mental health or battled with depression, anxiety, and addiction,” Matte states. “Our mind and thoughts can be our own worst enemies. I’m learning how to turn those enemies into friends.”
TFE launched the album at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, kicking off a Canadian tour in support of the record with stops in Toronto and Montreal on July 14-15.
In the spirit of embracing the beauty of novelty and change, he elaborates on the album’s message, explaining that “for my whole career I’ve stayed away from addressing my family, but addiction and personal struggle should not be kept secret. I am ready to share this to help break a stigma that exists around these very common issues, and encourage people to express their lived experiences.” At the heart of Oh Brother exists a bright light giving space for people and communities to heal and evolve. “I’ve been lucky to have so much support from friends, family, and fans, and I hope that Oh Brother can provide that support to strangers as they overcome the challenges of their own narratives.”
