Genre: Worldbeat

Accomplished kora player and singer-songwriter Sophie Lukacs released her new album BAMAKO on April 21. The album features Malian musician Habib Koité.

She’ll also launch the album with live performances in Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal

The eight-song release features various musical styles and a selection of guest artists.

Sophie’s debut single, “Falling,” is an excellent introduction to her vast array of talents. The listener is immediately treated to a beautiful, twinkly beat that serves up Sophie’s ethereal vocals. The track exudes a laid-back, relaxing feel that leaves the listener soothed, and the lyrics are poetic and possess a sing-song quality.

Sophie shares,

“I use the word falling because the process  – as hard as one may try otherwise – is sometimes out of your control,” says Lukacs. “It’s terrifying, but also the most beautiful thing in the world.”

“Dream of Love” is a collaboration with Jesse Ryan and begins with a beautiful, gentle beat. As the song progresses, Sophie’s relaxed yet polished vocals intertwine with the beat. The lyrics, “I know, You know, That I’m holding on, Holding fast til I dream of love,” are poetic and introspective, and Jesse’s smooth and inviting saxophone solo works perfectly along with the song’s dynamic.

Overall, with its soulful vocals, and diverse musical influences, BAMAKO has something for everyone. Listen and find out for yourself.
