Trina Kae – Five Questions With

Trina Kae

Trina Kae creates a vulnerable indie-pop journey from the heart on her album, Narrative

Okanagan Valley, BC-based songwriter, and producer Trina Kae has unveiled her debut album, Narrative.

As the sole songwriter, producer, and performer on this album, Narrative takes listeners on a journey of love and heartbreak. This album features the bold single Smash the Patriarchy, with lyrics rooted in social justice.

Trina Kae is a graduate student by day, “Who says you must have only one thing you’re passionate about in life?” This album has been years in the making, “I’ve wanted to make music since I was 11 years old, I’m 28 now.”

The artist spearheaded the entire recording process, “songwriting and producing allowed me to seep emotion into each part of every song.” Many of the songs on this debut album are light, airy, dreamy pop songs about love, heartbreak, and life. However, Trina Kae mixes it up with a couple of heavier songs with grungy electric guitars and seething bass lines (e.g., At the Bottom and Remedy).

Trina Kae writes her songs from the heart, and because of that, “a lot of these songs are incredibly vulnerable. A part of me didn’t want to release a lot of these songs, but I loved what I created and thought my feelings might resonate with others feeling similar things.”

As a graduate student and psychotherapist in training, Trina Kae’s lyrics are real and raw, as she knows how to connect with her feelings and experiences. Messages of social justice seep into her songs, with Smash the Patriarchy looking to dispel feminist myths and act as an anthem to bring warring narratives together.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m a producer/singer/songwriter based in Kelowna, BC. I have an airy, dreamy, indie-pop sound, but I have my darker moments where I’m inspired by my teenage alternative-punk roots where I throw in some grungier, brooding sounds.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

“Narrative” is my debut album. I wrote and produced the whole thing, start to finish. The album is mostly about a journey of love, heartbreak, and healing. At other times, the album goes in a different direction. My song “F*** the Patriarchy” has a feminist social justice anthem vibe that is about bringing people together.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

I write from my heart; my lyrics usually consist of everything I want to say but am too scared to verbalize. Telling my stories through music is kind of therapeutic for me, I can’t hide from my feelings or experiences when writing. I’m hoping when others listen, they feel like they aren’t alone in their experiences and that they are able to some comfort that they aren’t alone in whatever they’re going through.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

I don’t have any upcoming shows…yet! I’m hoping to create an acoustic set for some small local summer shows. I’m used to hanging out in the studio, but the energy and community at live shows are what bring music alive.

What’s your goal for 2023?

I’m finishing up a graduate degree in April, and I am excited to have the time to dedicate to my first love, music. This year I’m excited to record and produce my second album, I have so many songs already written on my acoustic guitar, and I’m excited to see how they shape up in the studio.
