Montreal, QC-based violinist extraordinaire Vanessa Marcoux has unveiled her album, La Jungle.

Track three of La Jungle, “Light Filtering Through Trees,” came in at over five minutes and was my favourite on the release. It begins with a light, bubbly feel, transforming into a dramatic full-bodied sound. Toward the end of the track, a beautiful hum of sorts is added to the music, and the bubbly, lighthearted vibe returns, leaving your tapping your feet and wanting more. Throughout the track, I found myself lost in the music. The intensity of the middle section brings forth controlled chaos, which, let’s face it, isn’t that what life is? Beauty amidst controlled chaos.

Vanessa shares on the track,

“I wrote this piece in the thick of the pandemic, sitting in the sunshine on my tiny balcony. As the reality of confinement set in and the world got smaller and smaller, I was craving vast landscapes and the freedom to move whichever way I wanted. Seeing as this was no longer a possibility – at least for the time being -the next best thing was to let my imagination run wild. “Light” starts out with a simple tune, which then spirals out of control and plunges into a sea of “orchestral matter,” if you will.

Essentially, this is what happens when you look very closely at a simple object, so closely in fact that you eventually see a whole new universe emerge.”

“Ether” is the final tune on the track. At 7 minutes 42 seconds, the track shows off Vanessa’s skills on the violin and crafting beautiful melodies. Throughout “Ether,” you hear what seems to be birds chirping along with the notes of the violin. As the track plays on, Vanessa introduces various elements and styles to the track, which takes the listener on a journey. I invite you to close your eyes, imagine yourself in a jungle with birds all around, and feel the calm. I could easily see this track used in a meditation situation. All in all, the track is pure beauty.

Even if neoclassical is not your usual style, I urge you to take some time, sit back, close your eyes, and enjoy all that La Jungle has to offer. You certainly won’t regret it.
