Five Questions With LambLion

Canadian duo, LambLion have released their new single, “Only The Brave”.

Circling the topics of life, death, and redemption, “Only The Brave” comes alive with the husband-and-wife duo — and esteemed musicians in their own right — Oliver and Danka Pigott and their signature enigmatic mix of alt-folk with Americana-rock undertones.

“We wrote this just before the pandemic hit,” Danka reflects on the track’s origins. “It turned out to be a call to action, especially in times like these.

It was born almost effortlessly in the course of an hour in Marc’s studio,” she continues, speaking of Nashville-based producer Marc Copely (Bono, The Edge, Willie Nelson, Roseanne Cash, Joe Walsh). “Marc began to jam on the guitar and Oliver came in with a vocal melody. I then joined in with the harmony and soon the hook emerged.

We all knew it was perfect.”

What’s interesting is that, as we navigate these challenging times, the lyrics take on new and unexpected meaning daily,” Oliver shares. “It’s also a song we play our 16-month old twin boys frequently… It makes them smile and dance every time!”

The video for “Only The Brave” was directed by Taras Lavren, featuring scenes of a desolate bike ride through Toronto under lockdown.  Check it out below, and find out more about LambLion via our Five Questions With segment.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

We have a throwback 70s vibe, combined with a modern indie sensibility. Lots of harmonies & falsettos, often leaving the listener unsure as to who is singing which part. Emotional, powerful, and at times romantic and mystical.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

Since we have yet to see when live shows will be permitted again, some dear friends of ours just hosted a show for us on zoom!  We had over 60 people tune in.  It was a fun one-hour show that featured mostly originals and a few interesting arrangements of covers.  Our live performances are characterized by intimacy, soulful connection, electric chemistry, and fun banter between songs.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Only The Brave.  It is our most recent release and we really love the hook, lyrics, and melody.  It has deep meaning for us and is one of our most prophetic songs to date.  The song was produced and co-written by Marc Copely (Willie Nelson, Roseanne Cash) in Nashville, just before the quarantine.  The lyric in the chorus begins, “no cowards when the hour comes…only the brave.”  It is a real call to action.  Can we stand in our courage and bravery when the time calls for us to do so?  Taras Lavren, a filmmaker we work with exclusively for our music videos, crafted a compelling video to match the intensity and feel of the song.  We also released a mini-documentary honouring brave individuals.
