Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Pete: Hi, I’m Pete. Some people call me JD.
Sal: Hello, I’m Sal. No one calls me JD.
Pete: Together we make up Sound of Kalima (or “SOK”), a production duo from Vancouver.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

Sal: We make music that reflects who we are when we are together. Wacky, wild and kinda deep sometimes. Our music is usually about something external and internal with a good bit of humour thrown into it. I hope people really get that; the humour. Our writing style is very much centred around inspiration and not the desperation of working on a bad idea until we get somewhere good. Keep things spontaneous and fun. Sometimes music shouldn’t be something that’s laboured over too much, it can be a knee jerk reaction that gets cemented in aural history. Regardless of how embarrassing it might be, it’s real.

Pete: Damn what more can I say?

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

Pete: Well, we were greatly looking forward to a headlining set at one of our favourite venues that was planned for the end of May, but because of COVID that is up in the air. Our shows are usually a ton of fun though. Because we work with so many different local artists, our shows usually including 3 or 4 or 5 other local musicians, all bringing out styles and energies together for a unique, diverse, but always bouncy performance.

Sal: What he said. Also, we haven’t put on our own show (as opposed to playing in our friends’ bands) in a long time and performed our new songs which are much higher in energy and genuinely reflect who we are. If we allow ourselves to be totally free during a show then I’m pretty positive people will have a good time.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Sal: This is tough and easy at the same time. Since we ditched all of our old songs, we just have one that’s up and that’s Wild Trash. It’s a pretty good litmus test to see if you’re gonna like our style, it’s not your everyday kinda music. However, that’s not the only thing or sound we are capable of so it would be much harder to say if we had our other songs out.

Pete: Yeah, pretty simple since we only have one song out at the moment. There’s a playlist called “Sound(s) of Kalima” where you can find 20+ songs that we’ve produced, so you can get a sense of the different styles we play in (Hip Hop, Pop, RnB, etc.)

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Pete: There are plenty of amazing Canadian artists. Some of my favourites are Chris & Andrea Clute, Bella St. Clair, ekke, Pavy, Carley Belfry, Hoodie Browns, Jamie-Rose (she’s an honorary Canadian), & Dora Kola. I’m also really enjoying the new Jessie Reyez record.

Sal: I like some punk bands coming out of Canada. White Lung is awesome. Of course, I also dig the chart greats such as The Weeknd. There’s a lot of good music in Canada and I just think the spotlight needs to expand from just the Toronto music scene. We just need someone to put the Vancouver music scene really on the map and let the artists shine. People over here definitely have something to say.
