Winnipeg, MB-based Paige Drobot has teamed up with us to unveil her new single, “Wonder”. The single, which is from her debut EP which is set for release on June 7 with a party at The Cavern in Winnipeg. Although this is not Paige’s first album, it is the first that she has done almost all by herself, so that is a huge accomplishment.
If you’re in or around Winnipeg, you should stop by the Handsome Daughter on March 7 for the debut gig with Paige and her band.
Check out “Wonder” below and find out more about Paige in our Five Questions With segment.
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
I’m just a weirdo, in Winnipeg. Paige Drobot isn’t a stage name or anything.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
So, after making a few different kinds of records with a few different people, I decided I might try it at home by myself! My songwriting output has been more than any bands I’ve been in could tackle at once, and some of the songs too…. Me. When I analyze it, I write in the musical equivalent of “stream of consciousness literary style”, or something. In reality, I just write whatever I need to, and follow the inspiration wherever it goes. The songs I picked for this upcoming EP are all of a similar style, but I don’t know how to describe it. Kind of purple, or something. I’m going to do a very orange record next, that’s the sound I’ve been digging lately.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
The first show, for the band that I put together to play the music from my upcoming EP, is March 7th at the Handsome Daughter, in Winnipeg. (With Holy Void and J. Blissette). We are also going to play a release show on June 7th at The Cavern in Winnipeg, and then do some touring in the summer.
I have played in quite a few different bands, different styles of music. The most important thing to me is a song that makes me feel something. I can’t play or sing or write anything unless I mean it, so the same goes on stage. You can expect me to be so happy to be there because playing music is the life force.. But at the same time meaning every note and connecting to a real emotional place. When I have a guitar I have a voice y’know? Anyway, it’s different every time, because I feel different all the time, and I improvise pretty impulsively.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
Right now I am going to go with my brand new single “Wonder”.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favorite Canadian bands/ artists?
My top 3 favorite Canadian artists of all time are The Guess Who, Rush and Klaatu. Timeless.
There are way too many good current Canadian bands for me to play favorites any further than, my hero, JohNNy SiZZle. The best Canadian live shows I saw last year were Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois with Joanne Pollock and Civvie, the OM sound, B.A. Johnston, and Lindsay Beaver.
