Five Questions With Tara Lord

Toronto, ON-based hip-hop artist and songwriter, Tara Lord recently unveiled her new single, “Praying”, along with a music video to accompany the release. “Praying” is the second single to be released from the young Canadian artist, following “Overthinking”, which garnered her national Canadian and US radio play, a spot on the coveted Spotify ‘Northern Bars’ playlist, Amazon’s ‘Breakthrough Hip-hop’ playlist, Apple Music’s ‘New Music Daily’ and a solid 33k+ monthly listeners on Spotify!

A truly refreshing alternative hip-hop offering, “Praying” encourages us to shed the dead and painful layers of our past in order to move forward with positivity and purpose.

Tara shares,

“”Praying” is a very emotional song for me, I expressed what I was feeling in the moment and kind of just let it all out in the booth. I wrote the song while I was having a mental breakdown and put all my frustration into words. A lot of people’s mental health, including mine, has been suffering due to the pandemic, and I feel like this song expresses that well.”

In the music video, Tara is seen completely in her element, delivering punchy, rhythmic bars and characteristically clever wordplay over a catchy, guitar-strummed melody and fiery hip-hop beats. Inspired by her own pent-up emotions, exacerbated by the pandemic, Tara let loose in the booth, openly venting her frustrations of the past and verbally manifesting her dreams for the future.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hey, my name is Tara Lord & I’m a hip-hop artist from Toronto, Canada.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

I have been in music from a very young age, I started at the age of 12, but I have been performing around the house since I was 4 years old. Music has always been a passion of mine. When it comes to my writing, I like to play instrumentals, vibe to it and then write about whatever I’m feeling in that moment. I would definitely say music is the main way in how I express myself.

How have you been keeping creative during the Pandemic?

During the first lockdown, my recording studio was closed. So I actually went out and got a home studio set up and learned how to record myself. During the pandemic, I definitely grew as an artist since I was able to work on music from home all the time and just work on my own.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

I would definitely suggest my “Praying” remix with Dub j and Roney. The remix actually just went number one on Itunes Canada. I’m super excited about the record and love the song so much!

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

There’s so much talent in Canada, I would definitely say some of my favourites are… Tory Lanez, Cocanina, Roney, Drake, Pressa, and Jessie Reyez.
