Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi, I’m Johnny, AKA Wolf Saga! I’m an Ojibwe electro-pop artist, producer, and songwriter based in downtown Toronto. I live for synthesizers, which will be 100% evident upon your first listen to any of my music.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

I find myself trying to blend my love for 80s pop with electro-clash/bloghaus sounds of last decade, while still constantly experimenting with new sounds. Writing-wise, I tend to write about relevant issues and important causes, including Indigenous reparations, land defenders, and Black Lives Matter, pairing lyrics about these topics with danceable, catchy production and instrumentation.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain

It’s still weird to contemplate playing live but I’ve got some exciting things in the works for early 2021! Wolf Saga has a variety of different configurations; I guess the project is modular, dependent on what the vibe is. A Wolf Saga show can mean a full band, or a more intimate acoustic performance, and everything in between. Regardless, I’d say expect a high energy performance from people who live to be on stage; my only goal is to have you leave the show feeling happier, uplifted, and hopeful while hopefully whistling/humming a melody freshly ingrained in your mind.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

I think the one song that encompasses what Wolf Saga is all about, sonically and lyrically, is “Get Back”, which I chose as the lead single from my most recent self-titled release.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Right now, I’m listening to Caribou, Jessie Reyez, Electric Youth, Coleman Hell, Milk & Bone, Shawn Mendes, and Chromeo. Was that too many? Ah well, check ‘em all out!
