Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Yes! I go by Sam I Am Montolla, all the way from Montreal. A Singer/Songwriter and dancer for many years. I’m dipping into producing too. What I can say, I like music and I like to create. I have collaborated and been featured with artists such as Shashu, Monk-E, and Jai Nitai Lotus to name a few. A staple member of Kalmunity, I’ve been active in the RnB/Hip Hop Montreal scene. Happy to be sharing with you my new music video coming out on October 16, called “I Get My Funk”.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

For me, I like to create a mood with my music, and when I write to give a personal take, influenced by my poetry and harmonies. I am inspired by many things. It’s Soul Music. It comes from the soul; my inspiration comes from RnB, Funk, Gospel, Hip Hop, even a touch of Caribbean flavor coming from my upbringing from Trinidadian and Barbadian roots. I think what makes me excited is what helps my creativity to flow.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

I will be doing more impromptu shows online as it’s a good way to connect to my audience. I had the pleasure to perform at the Hub City Music Festival online last week and that was a great experience so looking forward to the future. To describe my performance, I would say that I am a mixture of old charm and new possibilities. I mesh my soulful vocals with banging rhythm and groove. I am also performing nowadays with my Ableton and MPK mini, to still give myself a live feel even without a band. At the same time, it helped me to learn how to produce.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Well, since I am pushing for my video this Friday, I am going to say the track “I Get My Funk” produced by Mofak, a great talent from Marseille, France who has his own following when it comes to the new Funk that’s coming out. I sing about strength, resilience, and self-love. The beat has a coolness to it and the lyrics bold. It’s about being here in spite of. This comes out of the mixtape project INTRO TO INDIGO.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

I would say I have a few. Being Montreal, I am surrounded by so much talent and bring various things to the table. I will have to say my boy Jai Nitai Lotus, he just put out a solid album this year, I’d like to give a shout out to Dr. MaD, a dope DJ and producer, and Kaytranada, I vibe to his sound!
