Five Questions With Tenise Marie

BC-based singer-songwriter, Tenise Marie released her brand new single, “10 Out of 10” on August 28, 2020.

Tenise is a self-described nomad and a “dreamer in a world on fire” – her music offers a shot of campfire folklore, infusing jazz and choral influences to craft an irresistible cocktail of calculated creativity – to be stirred, served over ice, sipped, and savoured all night.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m Tenise Marie, a Kootenay-based singer, songwriter, and dreamer in a world on fire.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

I grew up singing and playing acoustic guitar around campfires in Argenta, BC, a unique and remote community at the north end of Kootenay Lake. At an early age, I was enchanted by the creative storytelling of singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, & Bob Dylan. In high school, I started writing songs in an attempt to process events in my life and make sense of the world around me. From age eighteen to twenty, I studied Contemporary Music & Technology at Selkirk College in Nelson, BC. My songwriting is a blend of my folk roots and my jazz education.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

My live performance is driven by acoustic guitar, soulful vocals, charming lyrics, and catchy melodies. I alternate between rhythmic strumming and folk-inspired fingerpicking while reminiscing of travels and lessons learned. I value connecting with audiences and sharing the stories behind songs as part of my performance. You will be able to catch me performing as part of the Homegrown Season at the Capitol Theatre in Nelson, BC this fall.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

My new single “10 Out of 10”!

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Ultimately, my favourite Canadian artist of all time is Joni Mitchell; her music has been one of my constant companions. Currently, some of my favourite Canadian bands are Carmanah, Shred Kelley, Moontricks, William Prince, & Rumour Mill.
