Multi-award winning, chart-topping Indigenous folk artists Twin Flames is made up of husband and wife, Chelsey June, métis (Algonquin Cree) from Ottawa, and Jaaji, Inuk and Mohawk from Nunavik. The new have unveiled their new single, “Battlefields”.
The new song — and the first preview to land ahead of their forthcoming and third studio album, OMEN — is a surprising departure from music the band has released in the past. Backed by an album teeming with pop and synth-heavy sound exploration, this track’s theme is based on a self-reflective consciousness covering the subject of mental health, a topic that hits home for the band.
“Mental health is a battle that many people face in silence,” Chelsey shares. “This song speaks to the stigma associated with it.”
“In the Arctic of Canada, Inuit People face the highest amount of suicides in the world,” Jaaji continues. “‘Battlefields’ is a song to remind our people we have to fight our own minds to survive…
“That we are fighters and, together, we can feel less alone and win this battle.”

We are Twin Flames Jaaji and Chelsey, we are Indigenous musicians making our way in the music industry.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
We always write songs from an honest truthful space in our hearts. We share stories in our songs and hope to teach others about key moments in Canadian history that many Canadians are unaware of. We also speak to our personal journeys, struggles, and victories.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
We will be playing our first live show since COVID -19 took over our world. The show will be outdoors for Harmony Concerts Stone Crop Acres Winery and Vineyard August 22, 2020.
For first time viewers, we offer an intimate show as a duo where you feel as if we are sitting with you in your kitchen sharing stories and music. We love engaging with our audiences. It is always an emotional concert that makes people feel many different things. We like to think we are pretty funny being a couple who joke around all the time so it makes the heavier subjects a little less difficult to take it. We never approach anything with anger always with a simple goal to share, educate, and bring about the change we wish to see in the world. As a full band, we offer a highly energetic concert that allows audiences to truly feel the music in our songs and we like to think we are entertaining with all our slick moves lol especially those of our bass player and lead guitarists their dancing is on point. Our drummer is a machine and is almost a show on his own for those who appreciate the intricacy of the craft.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
That is hard to choose because all of our songs are so different. Taking them in offers a full journey. Our most popular songs have been Porchlight a song dedicated to the families and women from our communities MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Woman and Girls). The other song would be Human which we were official songwriter for UNESCO to celebrate 2019 International Year of Indigenous languages. However, our brand-new single titled Battlefields speaks to mental health and the battle that so many faces in silence from our new Album OMEN due out in August.
