Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi! My name is Dave Spivak of the Dave Spivak Project. I’m a Neil Young obsessed singer/songwriter who was born and raised in Winnipeg, MB! (Go Jets!) I currently live in (and love) the city of Calgary, AB, but my roots will always be in Winnipeg. My songwriting has many of my influences and experiences from Winnipeg woven throughout the lyrics. I love everything about the city from the downtown culture to the surrounding beach towns where I spend my summers with my family.
My debut album ‘West of the Red’ was released in 2017. The song ‘Get out of my House’ is known for its dark musical tone and original sounding score. Other hits include ‘Ran Outta Money’ (a catchy blues tune) and ‘Breakfast for One’ (a song about those relationships you have that you don’t really ‘see’ until you’re out of them).
My sophomore album will be released in the next year. My first single Winter Fog debuted on June 4th, 2020, and is currently streaming everywhere with a dynamic lyric video on YouTube.
When I’m not making or listening to music I’m all about anything to do with comedy (Larry David is a God), going on mountain bike rides, road trips, and kicking back with family and friends.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style
If I were to describe my music I would say it’s hard to put in a box. The base of my music is derived from experience-soaked lyrics with hooks built around a feeling. It has a variety of musical undertones from Rock, Country, and Blues – basically Roots Rock.
My writing style is ever-evolving, but my process has remained somewhat consistent. I am always writing down lyrics and thoughts when I think of an amazing line or string of words that give me a buzz. Sometimes I’ll sit down and write a song in ten minutes while strumming my guitar and drinking a coffee. Other times I write the music and add lyrics afterward, picking and choosing from lyrics and words that I feel have a connection to the music.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performances?
Much like the rest of the world, my musical performances have all been put on hold due to the pandemic. I was excited to get out there this summer as I had a Midwest USA solo tour planned, as well as several Canadian outdoor festivals (I love performing at these).
I like to have a good time and I love it when the people at my shows are having an even better time! It’s very therapeutic for me. This is a time when I get to connect with my fan base and see people enjoying my music. When you see someone singing your song lyrics with you it is the best feeling in the world. The energy from the crowd is always reflected back – one of my best shows was at the Burton Cummings theatre in Winnipeg as the ambiance of the venue was as much a part of the show as the performance and crowd. A perfect trifecta!
If you were to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
100% my new single Winter Fog. I wrote this song last year and I really feel this song reflects how I’ve developed as a songwriter. This is a song about struggle, love, and hope with an underlying message that life’s always been tough. I think this is a sentiment many people can relate to.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favorite Canadian bands/artists?
Oh man, there’s too many to list, but off the top of my head, I’d say ‘Andre Pettipas and the Giants’ (Cape Breton, NS) – their music is rockin’. The obscure band Wrench (MB) – king of the E string. Monster musicians ‘The Hot Shelly Longs’ (Winnipeg, MB) – totally unique style of music, you’d love it…mind-blowing. Colter Wall (Swift Current, SK) – his cover of Ian Tysons Bob Fudge is a must-listen. Corb Lund (Taber, AB) – his performances are AMAZING and his music – too much!
And of course…Neil Young!!! (Hi Neil!!)
