Lido Pimienta announces new album, Miss Columbia

Toronto-based Lido Pimienta has announced the release of her brand new album, Miss Columbia, the follow-up to the 2017 Polaris Music Prize winning album  La Papessa. All of the songs were written and arranged by Lido, and she co-produced the album with Matt Smith aka Prince Nifty.

The eleven tracks on this album are a delicious fusion of what Pimienta describes as ‘electronic meets cumbia’ and are a bold musical statement worthy of your attention.

We can’t get enough of “Eso Que Tu Haces”, which you can check out below. Piemienta chronicles this song as a roaring declaration of discovery, as she exhales loudly, “Eso que tu haces / no es amor” (“that thing you do / is not love“).

An interesting detail about this album is that the title was partly inspired by the mistake when Steve Harvey accidentally awarded the 2015 Miss Universe crown to Miss Columbia instead of to Miss Philippines, causing her to reflect on the anti-blackness she’s experienced, and how she was viewed as an outsider and as a “weird artistic tomboy” as a teen. Lido – an Afro-Indigenous, queer feminist – created Miss Colombia as a canvas for introspection, with pieces about love (and self-love), and loss. Other songs confront divisive politics in Colombia, Indigenous inequality and racism, and ultimately to bring her closer to home.

Fans can check out Pimiento at upcoming shows in Sudbury on March 6, or Toronto on April 25th. See her full tour date listings below:
