Welcome to the Indie Spotlight – where we profile a new independent artist every month. This month we’re talking about Barrie, Ontario’s Sophie and the Gentles.
The four-piece – led by lead songstress Sophie Gentle – formed two years ago and continue to grow as a band. Their “Vintage Pop, Rock, and Soul” sound comes together through Gentle’s songwriting and the band’s overall chemistry together. She says her bandmates know her songwriting style so well, their jam sessions seem effortless. They recognize some legends among their growing list of influences; names like Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, and David Gilmore.
Though Gentle says the financial aspect of their careers creates obstacles for the band, it certainly hasn’t stopped them. In 2018 they recorded their debut EP Love; a five-track compilation that dances with themes of love, happiness, truth, sadness, and growth. The EP can be streamed on all platforms, and their Youtube page holds all of their music videos and interviews.
The future of Sophie and the Gentles is endless, says Gentle. She hopes to hear their music on the radio, to reach even more fans nationwide, and to land a few festival slots. Check out more on this month’s Indie Spotlight Sophie and the Gentles here.
