Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Phöenix Lazare, pleasure to meet you, folks! I’m a redheaded coffee addict & singer-songwriter from a small magical town called Salt Spring Island, BC. I started singing and writing music when I was twelve years old and haven’t looked back! I couldn’t be more grateful for this passion, as it’s taken me to many corners of North America; I received a bachelor’s degree in songwriting from Berklee College of Music in Boston and am currently based in Nashville, TN.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
To be honest, my style varies depending on my mood, though I tend to categorize the genre of my music as folk/pop. The core of my work stems from authenticity; I learned from my biggest inspiration – Joni Mitchell – the best you can be in this industry is yourself. I’m constantly influenced by what I’m listening to, whether that be classic singer-songwriters, folk or electronic music, I take hidden gems from those songs and subconsciously incorporate them into my writing.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
Surprisingly enough, I actually don’t have any upcoming shows! I’m in the process of recording my debut full-length album, so all of my energy has been focused on that. When I do perform live, I typically play with a rhythm section and play acoustic myself. I sometimes get stuck in the songs’ grooves and make an absolute fool of myself dancing, but always focus on the lyrics and emotion behind the music.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
I would actually say this new single – “Salt.” I’ve been on a journey of growth within my myself and my music production for years, but this song sinks back into my roots. Just me, a guitar and lots of raw emotion.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
Joni Mitchell will always be my favourite Canadian goddess! But aside from her majesty, there are so many incredible Canadian musicians. Some of my favourites include Rush (duh), Bahamas, The Bros. Landreth, Madz & Luke, Erin Costelo, Maddie Jay, WILLA.
