Some shows feel loud. Others feel chaotic. Otoboke Beaver’s sold-out stop at Ottawa’s Bronson Centre on a TUESDAY somehow managed to be both.
Opening the evening was Ottawa’s own Passenger Princess, whose unapologetically abrasive punk set proved to be the perfect introduction to the night’s mayhem.
Their gnarly, in-your-face sound and stage presence wasted no time pulling the crowd in, turning even the most innocent concertgoers into willing participants in the growing mosh pit.
Backed by a dedicated hometown following, it’s no surprise Passenger Princess were chosen to open this show, as they are gaining quick momentum in the SKATE OR DIE punk rock scene.
Then came Otoboke Beaver.
From Kyoto Japan to North America, Ottawa was treated to some of the finest breakneck shifts, blistering energy and razor sharp music as the 4-piece crashed the stage in a fashion you could only be there to really witness.
The devotion from the audience was impossible to ignore. Fans screamed every word they could, surging towards the stage and, not even by night’s end, had completely emptied the merch table. Otoboke Beaver aren’t simply admired, they’re adored.
One of the night’s most unforgettable moments came when guitarist Yoyoyoshie climbed aboard an inflatable beaver and crowd surfed across the packed venue, somehow making an already outrageous performance even more memorable.
As the set drew to a close, neither the band nor the audience seemed ready for it to end. Encore chants filled the room again and again, with Otoboke Beaver returning repeatedly as the cheers only grew louder. It felt less like fans asking for one more song and more like two sides refusing to say goodbye.
For a band whose live reputation borders on legendary, Otoboke Beaver somehow still exceeded expectations, delivering one of the most exhilarating punk performances to hit Ottawa this year.
