Place Bell was treated to an evening of loud, unapologetic rock on June 5, as Amyl and The Sniffers headlined a stacked bill featuring Party Dozen and legendary grunge pioneers L7.

Opening the night was Australian duo Party Dozen, consisting of saxophonist Kirsty Tickle and drummer Jonathan Boulet. The pair delivered a fascinating and unconventional performance that blended noise rock, punk, and experimental sounds. Both musicians showcased impressive talent throughout their set, with Tickle bringing relentless energy and intensity to every moment. While their unique style was certainly interesting, the repetitive nature of some of the material occasionally made the set feel a bit redundant. Nevertheless, their musicianship and stage presence made for an engaging start to the evening.

Next up were L7, the iconic ’90s grunge veterans who absolutely mopped the floor with the crowd. Their sound was as dirty, gritty, and unapologetically grungy as ever, instantly transporting me back to my high school years. The band sounded fantastic, proving why they remain such an influential force in alternative rock. Highlights were plentiful, but “Wargasm” stood out as the clear favourite of the night. After years of listening to their music, it was a pleasure to finally witness L7 perform live.

Of course, the main event was Amyl and The Sniffers, and from the moment they took the stage it was obvious what the crowd had come for. The atmosphere exploded into nonstop chaos, with crowd surfers continuously pouring over the barricade from the first songs until the final encore. The security team deserves tremendous credit for handling the constant stream of surfers throughout the night. Unfortunately, I witnessed one security guard take a hard fall after a crowd surfer came down awkwardly on him, requiring assistance from paramedics. Thankfully, he was quickly helped out of the pit. Seeing the crew work so tirelessly throughout the show was a reminder of how important these individuals are in keeping everyone safe while allowing fans to fully enjoy the experience.

As for the band, they delivered exactly what fans expected: a high-energy, nonstop rock show. Amy Taylor is an absolute force of nature on stage. Her raw energy radiates through every movement, every lyric, and every note. It’s something that truly has to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Backed by a rock-solid band, Amyl and The Sniffers powered through a fantastic 21-song set that never lost momentum.

Among the many highlights were “U Should Not Be Doing That,” “Knifey,” and the crowd favourite “Hertz,” each one igniting the audience and sending another wave of surfers toward the front. The band’s chemistry and tight performance kept the energy levels high from beginning to end.

While Place Bell may have felt a little larger than ideal for a band whose chaotic punk energy seems tailor-made for more intimate venues, Amyl and The Sniffers made the best of the space and still managed to create a connection with the audience. They delivered a memorable performance that left fans exhausted, exhilarated, and wanting more.

If you get the chance to see Amyl and The Sniffers live, don’t hesitate. They’re one of the most exciting rock bands on the road today, and their live show is absolutely worth experiencing.
