Review

“Yellow Spider” is the kind of song that quietly wraps itself around you. Built on delicate acoustic instrumentation and an intimate vocal performance, the track feels deeply personal without becoming overly heavy-handed.

The lyrics feel conversational and honest, balancing humour with real vulnerability. Lines like “My roof here is leaking / My heart is just sinking” hit with a quiet emotional weight, while the repeated request to “build a new home for me” carries deeper meaning beneath its simple wording. Instead of dwelling in sadness, Porter finds an unexpected sense of comfort and connection in the tiny spider beside her.

What makes “Yellow Spider” so compelling is its balance of whimsy and sincerity. The imagery of the spider’s “pale yellow” dress and carefully woven web gives the song a meditative quality, while the understated acoustic arrangement keeps the storytelling front and center. Porter avoids overproduction, delivering a beautifully simple folk song that feels comforting, human, and genuine.
